France Riots Over Cost of Living as Macron Urges Calm
More than half a million people marched on Saturday, with close to 2,400 arrests and more than a half thousand police and firefighters injured. Macron says cost of living concerns are at the root of unrest, but vandalism will not be tolerated. Whenever offenses are committed, they must lead to appropriate legal proceedings. Those who have destroyed must pay. Those who have looted must reimburse. Those who have sought to bring down the republic will have to answer for it.
Yesterday, several hundred thousand of our fellow citizens demonstrated with the intention of expressing legitimate demands. We must never confuse them. For those who destroyed, vandalized and looted. Let's bring our correspondent Rosalind Matheson there and Ros, really extraordinary scenes in France, also afflicting other parts of Europe, as well. Are the themes sort of broadly the same? We did hear Macron address some of the the complaints over cost of living over high energy costs.
Well, it's a familiar pattern really in France. So what you get is protests that start around a single issue. In this case, it was education and the quality of schools and teaching, and then it moves into something very big and broad and complex and much, much harder as a result to bring under control. So, as you were saying, there are now concerns around cost of living, uh, petrol prices, for example. It's all becoming a quite complex soup and very difficult again for the government to address, because it then comes into those very deep, structural economic challenges that France has been facing for many years alongside other countries in Europe.
So, you know, budgets under strain, high debt loads. Concerns around the cost of living, rising energy prices again fuelled no doubt by the conflict that we've seen in the Middle East, you know, issues around pensions, unfunded pensions, raising the retirement age. And really, the government has been grappling with this for years and how to address some of these concerns when budgets are already out of control. And so you can see that these singular issues become more complex.
You get some elements who come in and start looting, rioting. And that makes it even more difficult again, for authorities to bring it under control. We have unions calling for more protests again in a few weeks, so this seems unlikely to go away any time soon. What sort of political position is the president under at the moment, particularly as we're really starting to see those gains in the polls from the far right Marine Le Pen?
Well, that's right. And this is a moment when Macron is trying, in a way, to build his legacy because he's not contesting the next election. He can't. So he's trying to focus on other issues around the European budget, ie defence spending, international issues and again grappling with these domestic problems at home. And do they feed into the coming presidential election and what do they mean? Again, particularly for Marine Le Pen, the far right candidate for president?
Does this help her say that, you know, she can bring law and order to France. She can contain these elements due to the issues around immigration. Come into this election. Again, you can see Donald Trump, the US president, opining from afar about what's happening in France. And is that all going to fade into quite a febrile environment around the election and particularly, you know, does that diminish Macron's legacy?
Is he really just essentially out of the game at this point, and does it fade in momentum towards Marine Le Pen?
