Election 2026 Special Coverage | Part 4
Its election night in America. Welcome back to Special Coverage right here on Bloomberg TV and radio. I'm Kimberly Lines alongside David Gura with some major news tonight are relief. It's now morning Wednesday on the East Coast as Democrats take control of the House and within the last hour are projected to take control of the United States Senate, with the president of the U.S. telling reporters he looks forward to working with the Democratic Party.
We still have some big races to go. We have Bloomberg, some in Bostic in Detroit tracking the Michigan Senate race, and Bloomberg's Brooke Southerland from Portland, Maine, following the Jackson Collins head to head matchup in that state. Meantime, let's take a closer look at the Senate. Bloomberg's Tyler Kendall Tyler. Well, David, as you all know now projected to retake the Senate. And if you look at the math as it's coming in, Democrats have crossed that crucial threshold of 51 votes.
When you add in the two independents that tend to caucus with the party. And I want to take a look at some of the bigger surprises that we got tonight, including that Senate race in South Carolina, where incumbent Senator Darlene Graham lost her bid against Democratic challenger Annie Andrews in a state that hasn't elected a Democrat to Congress since, to the Senate since 1998. Andrews is a pediatrician by training, and she really made this race about affordability around health care costs.
But I did want to add that this is seen as a loss for the eye industry, which poured a $4.1 million in advertising for Darleen Graham in a last minute push because she was seen as being friendlier to the data center buildout. Next up, let's take a check on Kansas, where we saw another upset there, incumbent Senator Roger Marshall, losing his bid against Adam Hamilton 51.3% to 45.7%. If we look at the map, I was actually just in Kansas, in Johnson County, which is over by the Missouri voter, uh, Border.
I spoke to farmers there who are getting hit by those higher fuel costs right in the middle of harvest season, a state economy that's been highly exposed to tariff disruptions. But I also wanted to mention one area that we actually haven't spoken about tonight. We won't get too much into the policy wackiness of it all, but farmers were very upset with Marshall's vote around country of origin labeling. When it comes to beef, I bring that up because this is part of the Trump administration's bid to bring down beef prices in particular, and that could have been part of why he lost this bid.
Next up, a check on Texas James Talarico making major headway with voters in the state, beating President Trump's hand-picked candidate of Attorney general, Ken Paxton. Taking a closer look at the state that President Trump won by double digits in 2024, we can throw back up the battleground map. A lot of the states that we saw tonight seen as toss ups, were ones that Republicans were defending. Look at all of the places that so far have went in favor for Republicans.
An early flip when it came to North Carolina, for example, that we are still waiting a whole flurry of results to come. That includes in Alaska, where polls are set to be closing right now, as well as Maine. And if we take a closer look at that race, it's where the incumbent senator, Susan Collins, is currently defending the seat that she has held since 1996. At the moment, 58% of the precincts are reporting and she is behind Troy Jackson, her Democratic challenger, 51.8% to 48.1%.
This is a state where the head of the Senate Appropriations Committee has really been trying to tout that she has brought dollars into Maine up, up and down the coast, really? Lastly, another one for your radar, where, of course, keeping a close look on Michigan, how the race is going there. Only about 29% of the precincts reporting, and it's very close at the moment. Abdul El-Sayed leading 49.5% to Mike Rogers, 48.6%.
This is going to be one of those races that Democrats don't necessarily need to win, but it is one that they are hoping to keep keeping in mind. Uh, David and Kelly, this is a Democratic seat held by the retiring Senator Gary Peters. So there will be some hours until we get the result from that race. Thank you to Tyler Kendall. Get some sleep. She's up early tomorrow morning for our coverage on Bloomberg Radio and television on Bloomberg Surveillance.
Really appreciate all your work throughout the night. Tyler just looked at Michigan. Let's bring in Bloomberg's Romaine Bostick in Detroit. Remain that margin very thin with less than a third of those votes counted so far. Yeah. And as more of those vote totals come in, the narrow the margin has gotten, we're outside the watch party for Abdul Al al-Said and several, uh, I guess, uh, the luminaries, if you will, from the Democratic Party, have stopped by to speak, including Pete Buttigieg, the former transportation secretary.
Current Senator Elissa Slotkin also spoke. And we also heard from Gary Peters. We had a chance to catch up with him as he was coming outside. Of course, he is the retiring senator. He is basically. They came in the seat that Mike Rogers and El-Sayed are vying for. I asked him about the so-called blue wave that now appears to be unfolding across the nation. He said this was actually a chance for Democrats to not only just reassert some of their policies, but the idea that what voters went to the polls for today was not only about voting for the Democratic Party, but it was about, in his words, a rebuke of some of the policies of Trump and the Republicans.
All right. Bloomberg's Romaine Bostick live in Detroit. Thank you so much. I just want to mention, quickly, a new projection coming in from Decision Desk HQ, projecting that Democrat Peggy Flanagan will win the Minnesota Senate race. This is another hold up for Democrats. Uh, of course, she was competing against Michele Tafoya, the Republican nominee. But this, of course, brings the Democratic total tonight, uh, known at least to have 52 seats in the Senate, which makes Michigan, uh, less crucial for Democrats, though of course, we will continue to watch it throughout the evening.
But Maine is an important race that is still outstanding as well. So we go there now to Bloomberg's Brooke Sutherland, who is live in Portland. Uh, Brooke, you gave us fair warning that it could be some time before we knew the results. In Maine. It is now midnight. How close are we to having an answer between Troy Jackson and Susan Collins? We we are getting closer. We're starting to see the results come in from Portland, which is a big block of votes here and one that traditionally favors Democrats.
We are seeing some Jackson wins in some key places that Collins carried in 2020, places like Sanford and Wells. And so those are big wins for the Democrats here. And so if you can keep up that momentum, especially as we get into Portland, which is a city that traditionally has favored the Democratic candidates, this could be a good night for Trey Jackson as well. But it is early here. We're still waiting for some more definitive results like we've seen elsewhere in the country.
But I can tell you the mood here on the ground is jubilant. Every time they put those numbers up on that screen, we hear another big round of applause. And so people here are excited. Even as we get past midnight, the crowd is not slowing down. It is jam packed in here and people are eagerly awaiting the results, people eagerly awaiting those results. Maybe you can break down a little bit for us again, more of the geography bets are off where Troy Jackson was expected to gain inroads here in this race.
Is it an urban rural breakdown? What does it look like? So what's been interesting about Collins is one reason why she's been able to hold on for so long is that she has a history of winning over ticket splitters. And so if you look at 2020, for example, Biden won this state by about nine points. But Collins held on to
