Plus, global business, finance, and tech news as it happens. The Bloomberg Business Week daily podcast with Carol Masser and [music] Tim Stenc on Bloomberg Radio.
Hi everyone, welcome to the Bloomberg Business Week weekend podcast. A holiday [music] shortened trading week, but it was a busy week and September certainly seemed to kick into high gear. We had a big Apple product announcement. The foldable phone from Apple iPhone Duo, it is here and super important. Also this past week, inflation reports that got the attention of investors ahead of this coming week's meeting and decision by the Federal Reserve.
And uh let's not forget US Canada trade tensions intensifying and the US war with Iran continued with no signs of backing down. That by the way driving the price of Brent crude to spike big time.
It's the beginning of September and Friday marked 25 years since the September 11th terror attacks. More on that this hour with a man who was at the Pentagon the day that tragedy struck. We also mentioned Apple just a moment ago. Yes, indeed. All eyes on Certino and the debut of Apple's first foldable iPhone. Unfolding all of the details. Bloomberg's managing editor for global consumer tech and our Apple guru Mark German.
Plus, renowned financial journalist and best-selling author Bill Cohen charts the rise and fall of Wall Street billionaire Leon Black and the firm he founded, Apollo Global Management. It's all in Bill Cohen's new book.
All that to come. We begin though with the debut of Apple's first foldable phone. It's called the iPhone Duo. Unveiled during a wide-ranging event out there in California. This as Apple's betting that a new category can energize growth for its biggest selling lineup. That new phone starts at about $2,000 for 256 gigs of storage. It goes up to 3,200 bucks for a two terbte version. The event also the first that John Turnis has presided over as Apple's CEO.
Together with the new lineups of Apple Watch and AirPods, these products will help people create, communicate, and be more productive and entertained while staying healthy and active in ways that are more personal and intelligent than ever. They represent the very best of Apple. the curiosity to imagine what's possible, the care to get every detail right, and the conviction to build products that make a real difference in people's lives.
That was Apple CEO, John Turnis. For more, we caught up with our in-house Apple Whisperer, Bloomberg's managing editor for Global Consumer Tech, Mark Gurman, who we should note correctly reported months ago what was coming from Apple when it comes to AI, Siri, its foldable phone, and more. I think they blew us away with the way the software and the hardware integrate. Just the way the phone opens and it's consistent from the front screen to the inner screen.
The way they have the photo mode working using it as a as a live photo viewer. Uh this kids mode, so on one screen you can show your kids some things to get them to focus on taking a shot of them. By the way, they copied that from Google. Uh neither here nor there, but it's cool. It's expensive. $2,000 goes up to 3200 at a two terbte configuration. The colors look slick. Uh I think it's going to do very well. They're going to sell every model they can make when this comes out uh in a few weeks.
Also, there's the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. Pretty minor updates. Uh but nice things. Uh the new colors, the black is going to be very popular. I think the burgundy uh I'm going to start calling it Cardier burgundy like everyone was calling last year's phone or orange. Uh, and then you've got the AirPods 5. Super minor update. Great price though on the higherend config. 150 bucks for an extra hour of battery life, wireless charging case, and you can swipe your finger on there.
And what that does is it raises the bar for the AirPods Pro at $250 because it's kind of like a baby AirPods Pro at this point. Uh, and then the other uh thing was the Apple Watch. Super minor updates. Pretty disappointing. New silicon, new health features. Not a ton there to write about, but next year and the year after there'll be bigger changes.
Wait, did I miss? So, wait, the battery for the new iPhone and the camera,
how are they?
Uh, the iPhone Duo battery life is uh decent. It grades at about 30 hours for for video playback on the interior screen, but then you get 44 hours for video playback on the exterior screen, which is pretty much the same as the Pro Max. Uh the battery life is you're going to get better battery life on the Pro phones. Um the the camera, two rear 48 megapixel cameras on the foldable phone, the duo versus three that you've been getting for some time now.
Uh on the Pro phones, uh the 17 Pro Max have three 48 megapixel cameras. That carries over to the 18 Pro and Pro Max. And you don't get the new variable aperture either on the uh on the Duo. So the camera is not as good. But the big omission on the camera, no telephoto, so you don't get that nice crisp deeper zoom on the Duo. But I don't care. I like the bigger interior screen.
Why is this coming out in October? And why aren't they not taking pre-orders until October? Like this that that struck me as a as different from the past.
Well, supply chain issues. And it it's not [clears throat] entirely different. What you've seen in the past is you've had super late launches into Deep October. You've had uh early November launches. So actually, you know, mid-occtober is pretty good given the supply chain headaches they've been facing with this device. This was initially scheduled to be a dual launch. They wanted to release these both at the same time.
Uh but in recent weeks, the supply chain issue just became to a point where they were just not going to have enough stock on day one if they launched these together. And it was going to create problems, PR nightmare for them to have people go to the Apple store and not be able to get this thing. And even still in October, it's going to be tight.
It looks really cool. I wasn't poo pooing it, but I'm like not as I wasn't as I'll be honest. I wasn't as excited about it as you were. You told me to, you know, that I will be excited about it. It's pretty cool. You were right. It it is like the only the the way Apple could do something. I mean, this is Apple all over it. Like you don't see any sort of seam there. Is that true for the folks who've you've spoken to who've tried it?
Like there's no sort of seam when you open or close this thing.
They put this film on top of it. They call it a nanoexture film. It's similar to the matte option you can get on a MacBook Pro, okay?
Uh or an iPad. And what that does is it makes the crease pretty much uh invisible to the naked eye. It's there, you just can't see it because it's covered up.
Okay, good question.
Go ahead, Carol.
Uh how do you put a case How do you put a case on the foldable phone?
So, there's two cases. There's they call it the case and then there's the folio. Uh the case is two parts. There's a part that you put on the on the exterior on the back and on the front and then it folds open and then you have the hinge exposed in the middle. And then you have the folio which is essentially the same but it covers uh the hinge and that has a kickstand built into it. And the the simpler case is 80 bucks and then the folio I believe is 130.
So pretty pricey cases from Apple.
What about third party stuff, Mark?
Oh, I have a third party iPhone duo case at home already. uh casemakers have been making this for for a while now.
Are they how how do they get the specs for that?
No, they've got guys in China who've got friends in the supply chain
