A black swan event overnight then was the story around, Bitcoin and this crypto hack. And Bitcoin is currently down 1.2% at 77,800. It's recovered, some some of the losses after falling more than 3% on the news that the world's largest crypto exchange was hacked. Binance says $6,300,000,000 worth of funds have been affected with $3,000,000,000 currently frozen. $3,000,000,000 worth of crypto frozen. Let's get more with Emily Nicolle, Bloomberg's digital finance reporter who follows this space very closely.

Emily, what do we know about the hack? So far, we don't know a ton. From what we've heard from Binance, there was a targeted attack made on an employee's laptop, which enabled the attacker to gain access to some parts of Binance's internal architecture. And through that, they were able to siphon a large amount of funds. Right now, the confirmed amount is around $6,000,000,000 worth of crypto. About 3,000,000,000 of that has already been frozen by people who issue those cryptocurrencies.

So it means the attackers can't use that cryptocurrency for now. The rest is still at large, but finance has said it's alerted law enforcement and is working with the relevant teams and companies that it can to try and recover those funds as well. We're just getting some headlines coming through. Timeline to resume withdrawals 45 are still on track to achieve that. Binance will recover all losses from the SAFU fund, which was set up a while back, and company funds.

In terms, Emily, of kind of the breakdown, how much of this is gonna fall on Binance? How much of it is gonna fall on that fund? If we do see significant losses, kind of how will this impact maybe the company's longer term picture and the broader implications for the business and the sector? So we don't have an up to date number for how much is in that SACU fund, but a few years ago, we had it at around 1,000,000,000.

So we know that at least there's some of the money is in that. And then the rest of it is gonna be company funds as finance has said. We don't have an accurate picture of what finance's financial picture looks like either because it is a private company. It's a very large company and a very secretive company for that matter. However, it is the largest crypto company in the space, largest crypto exchange in the world.

Generally, it's thought to be very well capitalized. So we'll have to see exactly what happens there. The thing that's a concern for investors is that Binance has suspended withdrawals for now. If you remember, you know, two years ago, we had the FTX collapse. The withdrawals were suspended for a time. Even when a company has the money to give out, it does depend a lot on how much customers do rush to that front door trying to withdraw their money and exactly how liquid everything is behind the scenes.

So we'll have to wait and see when those withdrawals do reopen as exactly what the impact might be. There's also a geopolitical angle here potentially and what it means for for for the armaments in in North Korea. Because if this was North Korea, that's one of the allegations, this is... We we know this is a clear source of funding for North Korea and its military. So there's that angle as well. Do we know it's North Korea?

What what is the evidence for that for that, Emily, right now? So we have several different analytics firms that are pointing to North Korea as the source of the hack. It's usually what they do. We tend to look at things that are patterns around the way the money is laundered, and the tactics that are used there tend to leave signs as to who is doing it. There are several different hacking groups. The biggest one of those is Lazarus that belongs to North Korea.

This is common tactics for them, and so that's why we're confident in those funds being able to say that this points to them. The issue is kind of what North Korea does with the funds after that. It's now very well established. The processes evolved to tag crypto assets that have been stolen by North Korea to get those things flagged in in the blockchain ledger, sanctioned assets. And so the ability to firms to take those assets, reprocess them, launder them, it does get harder and harder every time.

But, you know, this is still a big state sponsored hack... Sanctioned state sponsored hacking operation. Sorry. And so they will have, you know, all the tactics that they're asked to try and get this money to their operations as well. Okay. Excellent update.
