Ukraine Should Be Free to Strike Russia, Says Trump's Ex-Envoy

I think a lot of times President Trump says things in the world immediately reacts to it. I think you have to unpack that in what he said. And when you look at things like elections, okay. A good example is that is up to the Ukraine people, not the United States, not for anybody else, but they've, you know, there you've got martial law. They don't hold elections in martial law. They're what is going to be involved. He talked today, just today here at the conference about having over a million people disenfranchised.

He doesn't want to go there. I understand their concern. And I think any democratic nation wants to have legitimacy. And the presidency of Ukraine, for example, is five years. It's now been almost seven years, and they're probably going to go there. I think what President Zelensky has done in militarily speaking, he's being attacked in schools, in residential areas, and he's attacking military targets inside Russia with the refineries.

Well, you know, I think there's been concern about what's happening on the world market with diesel that that is really affecting very little. The market, which we know. And anybody who does knows anything about the markets knows that. So I think what the rhetoric that you hear, I think people ought to take a step back and just assume in its noise level, even from the president on the street, I guess the concern is more broadly stepping back that this could constitute or be the beginning of a return to what we saw in the beginning of 2025, when we had that meeting in the Oval Office.

And sort of some of the same rhetoric came from the Trump administration. Do you see that as a risk? No, I don't. I think what's happening is you see a couple of world leaders that are basically they're both kind of like, you know, they're both kind of stubborn and they both speak their mind. They both they I don't ever the President Zelensky. So let's get Trump a real not a real good command of the English language when he speaks English, but understanding the nuance behind it.

And he said even today that he's really very supportive of what the United States has done. But then you hear things he says, I understand what he's saying. I kind of get my mind how it's translated and what he means to say. And then the United States hears something back and take a step back and see what really happens. What you the the old saying about proof is in the pudding. What does this really look like going forward?

正如那句老话所说:“事实胜于雄辩”(proof is in the pudding)。

I think Ukraine's, you know, vast for European support. And I've got European support. I think Europeans are really stepped up here in Warsaw, especially the poles, when they're putting 5% of the GDP on the defense spending more than any other nation, more than America is even spending right now. So I see he's getting that. He's under pressure. When you look at sort of the true David and Goliath story with Ukraine getting into Russia, what's happening right now and Putin, I think is trying to wait out everybody trying to say, well, the more pressures I keep on them, the longer it's going to take.

Their resolve is going to weaken. Well, you know, everybody gets tired after five, five years of war. But Ukraine has been very, very strong. I know they're going into winter. Last year winter was hard. There refiners have been hit as well. They only have one refinery. And I see that you see the response of Ukrainians against the Russians. And I think we just need to. We should all just step back and let Ukraine make determinations of what it's going to do, how it's going to attack, you know, appreciate that.

You know, I lived in a war, the first in Vietnam War when you let countries have sanctuaries. And that's a big mistake in warfare. And I think you can't say hands off sanctuaries like the fuel industry are the refiners. And I think let Ukrainians do what they're been very good at and right now. And I think the rhetoric will kind of take care of itself. Everybody needs to step back and not get excited about it. Look what's happening on the ground.

And I'd like to get your perspective on that. Step back now. We're entering almost now it's been five years on your private train. Yeah. How do you how do you see that resolving itself? How do you see the war ending at this stage? Well, I think there was a comment made today by President Zelensky who's keep putting pressure on President Putin. He seems to think he's winning. He is not accomplished any strategic goal.

There was a mention today. It is true that he's lost between 1.2 and 1, 4.5 billion people, soldiers dead or wounded in his war. He's losing about 30,000 a month. Let me give you a perspective. The Soviet Union in Afghanistan lost 18,000 in that war and left. And we would never accept catastrophic casualties like he's experienced today. And I think he needs to understand you're not winning. You know, when you look after the invasion, he's gained about 1% of land since that time.

None of his strategic objectives have been reached at all. And I think we just need to keep pressure on him. And the constancy of saying, you're not winning this fight, we're going to be here as long as it takes to do so and keep putting the pressure on him. And I think his response right now is response a weakness not of strength. And what he's trying to say, like with the diesel deal with the United States, that it's not really a good deal.

It's not really all encompassing out there and shows me his weakness, not his strength. He's trying to capitalize on elections coming up in United States. He's trying to capitalize on President Trump right now. And most people see through it.
