Trump Calls for Zelenskyy to Step Aside
Bloomberg News White House correspondent Catherine Lucey joins us now with more. Catherine, great to have you with us on this Sunday morning, and perhaps we could start with just looking at what led to to this moment. We had the announcement of this diesel deal, but the president for many months now has been kind of hammering the Ukrainian president to stop attacking these oil and gas energy sites within within Russia.
This is the kind of final moment of that, it seems like, the the... Him indicating that this shouldn't be happening and suggesting that the president should step down. Yeah. Certainly, it was an escalation of those comments yesterday. The president is very frustrated. And, of course, this is a relationship that has long, I think, we all know, been pretty rocky, been pretty up and down, you know, from the... You know, from before the president, you know, started his second term.
But he is... The president is very frustrated about oil prices globally. He has been vocal about Ukrainian strikes on oil infrastructure, and he sees me make the argument that this is a reason for high oil prices. Of course, as we all know, oil prices rose this year after the start of the Iran war, so it is more complicated than that. But he is definitely trying to zero in on this and make this argument. And I think he's also frustrated that a a conflict that he claimed he could easily, resolve, you know, when he took, office, you know, continues to grind on, and they have not, you know, despite, you know, a series of efforts over the past, you know, year plus, have not been able to, find a resolution here.
We're also in a really fascinating place because everyone is talking about the midterms, and we talk all the time about how allegedly American voters do not vote for candidates based on foreign policy. But we have a rare moment where there's a pretty direct line between US foreign and the issues they do care about, which is the price of gas, the cost of living, and things like that. We've already seen how the Iran war is entering this conversation, but our own Bloomberg analysis is that this amount of oil or diesel, even if it gets through and it may not, it seems like, isn't really going to impact prices.
So are there other repercussions president Trump is risking here by by almost opening up, at least a diplomatic spat, on another front? Yeah. And I think you cited already, I mean, Republican, opposition to this frustration. I thought it was interesting that their name... They may be naming this effort the Ronald Reagan Act, which clearly seems to be a effort to sort of call back a different kind of Republican leadership.
But, yes, it's absolutely true. It's not clear if this will move the needle at all or, honestly, what would move the needle at all between now and election day. The president is trying to find things to show that they're taking action, And Americans don't vote on foreign policy until they do. Right? So, I mean, they are... I think what people are voting on is pocketbook issues. People are frustrated about prices, and among the prices is the price of gas.
And if you are someone... You know, ranchers and farmers and and folks who use diesel, the price of diesel is a huge issue. And those pressures haven't gotten any better, and people are are able to tie that to the war in Iran, which has not ended. And so, you know, know, voters are able to see all of this. And so Trump telling them that, you know, as he did as he did yesterday in a rally and Friday rally that, you know, that they are working on this, that prices are going to come down.
People aren't feeling it. And so I think it's it's pretty clear that voters are very frustrated.
