Live from Washington, D.C. this is Balance of power with Joe Matthew. President Trump heads for Ohio with 22 days left. Welcome to the Monday edition. As the president stumps for the Republican Senate in this must win state, with gas and diesel holding near their highs and our eyes on the Middle East, we're going to get more on the president's agenda from Bloomberg's Tyler Kendall, who's at the white House with insights coming up from Republican Congressman Mike Lawler of New York.

Oil and gas prices moving higher as the attacks on Saudi Arabia continue. On this Monday, we'll discuss it all with Natasha Hall at Chatham House, and we'll assemble our political panel as Elon Musk resumes his role as the biggest individual known donor in midterm politics. It's all after a look at Wall Street. Charlie Pellet starts us off this hour with the latest on the Monday trade trolley. How's it going? Right now we do have the S&P 500 index.

Trading a little changed and lower has been fluctuating between gains and losses. But right now down eight points we've got the S&P holding close to a record 7802 down now by one tenth of 1%. Dow Jones Industrial Average is gaining 219 points now up by about 4/10 of 1%. The Nasdaq Composite Index down 4/10 of 1%. Nasdaq 100 index down 7/10 of 1%. All of this with gold down $28. Youngstown 7/10 of 1% at 4165 the ounce.

Crude. Major story. As Joe mentioned WTI surging now by 2.1% 9377 a barrel oil higher as Ukraine cast doubts on that energy cease fire touted by President Trump while in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia suffered its deadliest strike since the Arab war began. Brent crude, the global benchmark 106 71, up now by almost 2%. Oil majors rallying today, along with the price of crude Exxon Mobil up 1.8%. Microsoft up 9/10 of 1% and Chevron up by 1.5%.

Also, ConocoPhillips are up by 2%. Uh, also metal platforms out with a new AI model called Muse Wonder, which the company claims as a big leap over its own predecessors. Metal platform shares they are rallying today, up now by 3.1%. I mentioned Microsoft. We're keeping an eye on Microsoft shares. They are up now by about 9/10 of 1%. And briefly, Delta Airlines says it plans to delay the launch of its new nonstop service between Atlanta and Saudi Arabia until next year because of drone and cruise missile attacks detected by the country.

Indeed, attacks on Riyadh airport and again, S&P 500 index now trading down by one tenth of 1% that Joe Matthew is a Bloomberg Businessweek. Okay, Charlie, thank you so much. He's en route right now with 22 days left until the midterm elections were three weeks out from tomorrow.

And the administration has decided, and frankly, this shouldn't really be news that Ohio is must win. This is Senator John Houston seat that which was held at one time by a man named JD Vance and the prior occupant of a Senate seat in Ohio. Sherrod Brown wants the job back, and this has become a knock down drag out, one of the most expensive Senate races in the country, right up there with Texas, Paxton and Talarico.

So this evening, the president will hold forth talking about all the issues that we bear down on here every day, including, yes, the price of gas, the price of diesel, and all of it leads itself to the whole situation in Ukraine. We're going to connect the dots on these issues. After a wild weekend in geopolitics. Bloomberg Washington correspondent Tyler Kendall joins us right now from the North Lawn of the white House, with the president on his way to Ohio.

Tyler, you can tell us more about this energy cease fire that the president announced over the weekend, because it's the very thing that he needs, at least in terms of what the administration is telling us and lowering prices to make an argument before a crowd like he is speaking to today in Ohio. What do we know about this Russian diesel getting into the market? Well, Joe, at this point, President Trump announced over the weekend that we were going to see an energy truce and that we would stop seeing attacks on refineries and power plants.

Though we've heard from both sides in this conflict, Russia and Ukraine both seeming to indicate that they were not aware nor have signed on to any such agreement. That is one part of the White House's push to get there to be a stop in targeting Russian diesel refineries in particular, that goes hand in hand with the announcement that we got last week and which you alluded to, which is that 13.5 million barrels of Russian diesel will be released from stockpiles over time, though there are questions here about just how much of an impact that will really make in the market.

Our own analysts at Bloomberg Intelligence released a new analysis earlier this morning that said the initial supply probably won't have that big an impact on prices that we pay at the pump, and that the bigger question here is whether or not Russian refineries can rebuild and actually increase their output. Which then brings us back around to the beginning here, which is that we would need to see those attacks stopped.

But Russia continues to hit Ukraine. Plus, Joe, that doesn't even get into some of the legal questions that members on Capitol Hill are raising, uh, about, uh, this potential deal to release Russian stockpiles, considering it upends what has been years of sanctions practice here in the US. Yeah, we're going to ask Congressman Mike Lawler about that. Uh, when he joins us in a few moments. I know that he had strong feelings about that Russia sanctions bill.

Is this all part of the address this evening? Uh, Tyler, do we have a sense of what the president's message will be in Ohio? Well, we did get somewhat of a preview, if you will, Joe, because this marks President Trump's second visit to Ohio in the last ten days. So if we get some of our cues from the last time he was there, he touted corporate investment in the state, bringing manufacturing jobs in in particular when it comes to the steel and auto industry.

He touted a new plant that's being built by Stellantis. Maybe this is going to take a very similar tact tonight we're going to have to see. But the fact that he is there in such a short amount of time does underscore that Republicans are feeling the pressure when it comes to this contest. You mentioned it. Incumbent Republican Senator John, who stood against former Senator Sherrod Brown. Our viewers may know him as the former head of the Senate Banking Committee.

And there's a lot of time going into this election. Keep in mind, President Trump won Ohio by 11 percentage points in 2024. This was considered to be Republican territory. There's also so much money going into this election, Joe, the largest Republican superPAC pouring in $100 million into this race so far. And we're not even towards the finish line. Wow. Um, you probably heard what the president said, uh, about President Zelensky.

Donald Trump, uh, has been blaming President Zelensky for bombing Russian refineries, helping to lift the price, knowing, of course, that the war with Iran has played a big role in this as well. But it's distillates we're talking about here in diesel has been feeling the weight of these attacks on Russian refineries, which is why the president advanced this idea of an energy cease fire. But listen to what he said about Zelensky in the driveway on Friday.
