US treasury secretary Scott Bessent made with China's top trade negotiator in New York yesterday, each side calling the talks positive. Shortly after, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Xi's visit to The US this week, finally, Bloomberg Washington correspondent Tyler Kendall joins us now. Tyler telling us what we all assumed, what would happen. What does it seem so far the outcome of the at least the very beginning stages of these talks?
Well, it feels like the two sides are trying to set the groundwork so that there is stability in The US China relationship. We heard The US representative Jameson Greifeld are calling some Bloomberg surveillance as much this morning versus actual tangible details that we'll get. Now the treasury secretary Scott Bessent did give us some insight into what they're set to discuss. That includes that they're confirming that they will have a dialogue around AI, though that seems to be more about addressing risks than so much addressing the concerns with slowing down development.
We're also going to be watching whether or not there's any update related to China's imports of Iranian crude. That was something else that Bloomberg pressed the USTR on. He didn't rule out that Washington could impose tighter restrictions around China's purchases of Iranian crude, but also said that he's living in reality, and it's difficult to curb those purchases. So a lot of different things, playing here. I will point out that when asked about an extension to The US China trade truce, he said maybe it could be three to six months if we get one.
Probably won't even get one this week according to him, but that is notable because it does confirm reporting that The US has been frustrated with China when it comes to export curbs related to critical and rare earth minerals. So I would also watch that as the week develops. Because we are awaiting for any new news on on tariffs as the trade investigations come to a conclusion. Tyler, does it seem like The US is trying to use this as a bargaining chip that they're holding back announcing any new tariffs based on the outcome of these meetings?
Well, the fact that we had reporting that The US was set to impose a seven and a half percent tariff related to allegations of Chinese overcapacity, but is now holding off on that. That could mean two things. One, maybe it could be going, ahead with, making sure that China is comfortable coming to The US, having these talks, but it could be a negotiating tool considering if those tariffs had gone into effect. They actually wouldn't have been that significant of an escalation.
It would bring the overall average tariff rate imposed under this administration to 20%, which is an agreed upon cap. So maybe The US holding off means that that number could go up depending on how these talks go. So that's sort of the balance that The US is trying to walk right now.
