Yesterday, that sent stocks [music] down and bond yields up. We're of course seeing the reverse today as Charlie outlined beautifully uh for us.

Of course, that is just digesting the hike of yesterday. The Fed of course in the dot plot did pencil in another one for this year. Whether that comes at the meeting in October or December, whether it comes at all, I guess is an open question. And maybe President Trump wouldn't be uh as willing to take a second hike in a hiking cycle with as much grace as he appeared to yesterday, suggesting that actually Kevin Worsh didn't defy him.

He gave him permission to vote for this along with the rest of the FOMC in what was of course a unanimous decision. Listen to the president on route to North Carolina yesterday.

Interest rates are too high. They're not appropriate. I talked to Kevin and I said, "You might as well vote with the board because it's not going to matter." Uh the board is very hostile. They're very political. They're doing the wrong thing. They're a bunch of politicians. We should be play paying the lowest interest rate anywhere in the world. I refer, of course, to Donald Trump's post on Truth Social before he made those comments in all caps.

Lower the interest rates for the United States of America and fast exclamation point. He did not apparently say that to Kevin Worsh when they spoke. And we should note, by the way, that we do not have evidence of that conversation beyond what the president said. Kevin Worsh wouldn't detail his interactions with the president in the news conference yesterday. Let's get to Tyler Kendall right now. We have a lot to cover with our Washington correspondent who stands on the north lawn of the White House as we speak.

Tyler, we're not expected to see or hear uh from the president today unless you can tell me about any updates. But is this the is this the message from the White House now that Kevin Worsh has the president's permission to hike rates? Well, Joe, it seemed like President Trump was standing by his Fed chair, saying, as you heard, that he told him that he should go along with the FOMC, alleging that policymakers are politically motivated against him, even as we repeatedly hear from the Fed chair himself that the board is focused on the economic fundamentals.

That includes how geopolitical risks are contributing to inflation. We did have some new reporting earlier today from Axios in terms of the president saying that when it comes to the conflict in the Middle East, he's going to have a big decision to make pretty soon. Last night, he did touch on the conflict in his remarks to voters in North Carolina. But it didn't really seem like we were getting closer to a diplomatic resolution.

Instead, saying that he's not sure Iran is ready to come to the negotiating table before the midterm elections. To the point that you mentioned before, Kevin Worsh was asked directly about any discussions with President Trump. didn't detail any discussions that he has or hasn't had, but he did say that the economy appears to be strengthening and he characterized what he called an attitude of optimism on the FOMC even as this White House has been trying to navigate a political message around the economy as uh Republicans keep playing defense when it comes to voter dissatisfaction uh with higher prices.

Joe and Kaylee.

Well, and of course, it's not just higher oil prices stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. There's also the effect of tariffs, especially in light of the uh still unresolved trade war between the US and Canada that of course has drawn Canada closer to the EU, which has offered an associate uh membership this week. Tyler, the president is now threatening to hit the EU with greater tariffs and perhaps cut off some trade if he deems that to be a hostile act.

What can you tell us about that? So, we didn't get further details beyond that, Kaye, including what would be the benchmark for the president to follow through on this threat, nor what authority the White House would use. One potential option on the table is section 338, which means that the US could lobby uh levies if they're tied to allegations of discriminatory trade practices. We should give greater context here that the EU already faces significant tariffs from the US, ranging anywhere from 10 to 50% for some of those sector specific tariffs, such as on metals.

We did hear from the EU defending this proposal to uh have an associate member of the block in Canada. The EU Commission spokesperson putting out a statement saying that quote the proposed strengthening of our partnership with Canada is not against anyone else. Now that's on the EU's side, but as you already alluded to, we know that Canada has been working to diversify its economy away from the US amid what has been these ongoing tensions.

It's pretty incredible to think that less than a month ago, it felt like we were on the brink of a trade deal with Canada. President Trump had said that it all was done. They were just trying to firm up those final details, but of course, those talks ended up falling apart.

All right, Tyler Kendall live at the White House for us on the latest tariff threats and of course the president's trip to North Carolina yesterday. Tyler, thank you so much. And as we consider the president's efforts to boost Michael Watley in the Senate race in North Carolina and the Senate picture across the map, we turn now to Jessica Taylor who is the Senate and Governor's editor with the Cook Political Report and is back with us on Bloomberg TV and Radio.

Jessica, great to have you as always and there's a lot we want to get to. If I could just ask you first though, as the president made tracks to North Carolina last night, is there anything he can do realistically to give Michael Watley a better chance in this race at this point, including perhaps throwing more money at the race?

More money would would certainly help. I mean, Republicans are outspending Democrats right now, but when you look at the gross ratings points and the number of times the ads are actually airing, Democrats still have an advantage there. But I think that the Trump is unpopular in North Carolina and this is a state that he carried just two years ago and certainly he can help Watley consolidate the Republican base and that will tighten up the race.

I don't think any race in North Carolina is going to be a blowout, but right now we still see former Governor Roy Cooper as having the advantage. We rate this race as lean Democrat.

Yeah. What's the uh what's the message right now, Jessica? The president talked a lot about crime last night. Uh but it will Republicans who are just now getting home to their districts to close the deal uh on some of these races still tell voters that the war was worth it that these record high gas prices, record high diesel prices are worth it because Iran will never get a nuclear weapon or has that talking point evolved?

I think that if the if that's the president's talking point, I think I I am highly skeptical it's one that's going to be successful because this is in real time. People are feeling the gas prices in competitive states like Iowa. Um they are feeling the fertilizer and diesel prices. They're feeling diesel prices in Alaska. There was a poll that just came out that shows Mary Pela continuing uh to opening up a wider lead there by bipartisan poll including from one pollster that is Trump's pollster.

Um, so you know, I it's the economy that is overshadowing everything, including crime, um, including culture war issues. I think it all just comes down to economics fo
