Coming up today, Kevin Walsh leads the Federal Reserve to a unanimous rate hike in defiance of President [music] Trump as the Bank of England gets ready for a hawkish hold. Russia's global assassination network prosecutors alleged that Moscow recruited people to kill dissident in Europe and the US.

Plus, as opposition to data centers grows around the world, one corner of Greece says, "Yes, please." Let's start with a roundup of our top stories. Fed Chair Kevin Walshes delivered his clearest demonstration yet that under him, the central bank will set policy independently of President Trump's demands for lower rates. The Fed's rate setters unanimously voted to raise borrowing costs by a quarter point and signaled another increase could come this year.

Walsh says inflation remains too high and insists that the central bank will deliver on its price stability mandate.

Last month in Wyoming, I expressed my commitment to a monetary policy discipline, not to a decision. I define the standard for action. We must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective clearly and at sufficient speed. Today, the FOMC decided that this standard has not been satisfied.

Responding to the decision by Walsh and his fellow policy makers, President Trump demanded rates of 1% or lower, but said that he still has confidence in the Fed chair. Bond markets have steadied following the Fed's tougher stance. 10-year Treasury yields have fallen uh to around 5%. The Bank of England is expected to hold interest rates at 3.75% today, but signal that it's moving closer towards a hike itself. Surging energy prices have pushed inflation to a fivemonth high in the UK with some economists warning that it could reach 4% early next year.

The same pressures are complicating the outlook for Prime Minister Andy Bernham who now says that next month's budget will be challenging.

I have taken difficult decisions in this job uh in relation to rep prioritizing government spending uh putting digital ID on hold for instance. So it's not the case uh that we aren't uh going to take difficult decisions. we will take difficult decisions to make sure uh the economy remains on track.

So that was Prime Minister Andy Bernham who was responding to criticism from former Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane who said that he was running a quote tax and spending socialist government with better Tik Tok videos. The prime minister's notable shift in tone comes as higher guilt yields are estimated to have harved the government's 23.6 billion pound fiscal headroom. [snorts] In other news, prosecutors say that they have uncovered a global Russian assassination network operating in Europe and the US.

The US Justice Department has charged five people accused of working for Russian intelligence. They allegedly recruited others to kill dissident. While all five remain at large, prosecutors say that one offered a US citizen $25,000 to track down and kill someone in Lithuania. The allegations include plans to attack NATO infrastructure, including train stations and warehouses supplying Ukraine. Now it comes just hours after the European Commission President Osanderline used her State of the Union address to highlight a range of hybrid attacks.

Threats are mounting on our soil. Just this week we saw it in Lisa, Denmark and Poland. And the attempted drone attacks in Leipik is another proof. We need to be clear about what this was. An attack using militarygrade material carried out by Russian operatives on European soil. An attack not only on one member state but against all of our union. And honorable members, we will not allow it. Vantoan says that Europe needs its own playbook to respond to security threats, including a new European Security Council and an equivalent of NATO's Article 4 consultations.

Now, in terms of President Trump, he has floated the idea of putting fresh tariffs on EU goods if he deems that the block's relationship with Canada is harmful to the US. The news comes after Ursula Vanderelion, the European Commission president proposed Canada becoming the EU's first associate member during that state of the union address yesterday. So, President Trump said that the news could have trade implications.

Canada's been a terrible trade partner and uh no, I don't see that. And if they do that, if I think it's at all a hostile act, I will put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things.

President Trump speaking to reporters yesterday. Canadians, meanwhile, are broadly supportive of efforts to formalize a deeper relationship with Europe. A recent Abacus data survey found 80% of Canadians support closer integration with the EU on issues including foreign policy, defense, and economic opportunities. That's up six percentage points since February. King Charles is planning to ask AI bosses for reassurances as Open AI reports several new safety incidents.

The monarch will host a closed door discussion with leaders today, including senior representatives from Nvidia and Anthropic, plus the UK's AI minister. It comes as the CEO of software company hugging face cleong told Politico that breaches of its systems by open AI models encouraged greater visibility.

I think it led to uh a lot of other you know revelations and and a lot of other disclosure of similar cyber attacks happening. Um uh which obviously is is great because it creates more transparency and gives everyone an opportunity to understand this risk better and uh and hopefully mitigate it in the future.

Hugging faces KM Dong speaking to Politico yesterday in a new report detailing the previously undisclosed incidents. Open AI shared instances of models misbehaving in order to succeed. The chat GPT maker said that the reports are not a comprehensive account of chatbot issues and outlined a case for employees to self-report similar issues. In politics, Sweden center-left opposition is now projected to win Sunday's election by just one seat.

Broadcaster SVT says that there's a 99.9% likelihood that the Social Democratled block will secure a majority. So the result puts former Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson in pole position to form a coalition government, but divisions among her political partners could complicate negotiations. So we continue to follow the fallout from Sweden's vote over the weekend. And lastly, Europe could see one of its smallest smallest ever potato harvests.

Research from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit suggests that the heat over the summer is likely to cut crop yields by about three and a half million tons. Bloomberg's James Walk has more. It's a hot potato issue. The lack of water and extreme temperatures mean the vegetables are set to be smaller and fewer at harvest this year. Potato yields are down as much as 20% in some parts of Europe. That means shorter fries and higher prices.

It's the latest food fallout from the summer with grain and corn also seeing record declines. For consumers, this potato problem may turn out to be anything but small fry in London. NASDAQ futures up 610. S&P 500 E- Mini futures also up by half of 1% this morning.

This as stocks were hit yesterday by the decision to increase interest rates in the US. So the S&P 500 closed down almost half of 1% and you have also seen uh further moves in rates. So the most uh rate sensitive yields in the US 2year Treasury yields are down two basis points this morning. Now, they did climb to the highest since 2024 in the run-up to the Fed decision, but the Fed hiked interest rates, and there seems to be an idea now emerging from that Fe
