All right, Charlie Pellet in New York. by myself in Washington. And one story that is bridging that divide today, though many of them do and we talk about them often here on Balance of Power is the conversation around regulating artificial intelligence.

In case you missed it this weekend, there was a lot of action as the CEO of anthropic Dario Amade posted an open letter calling for pacing the frontier, a three-step plan he outlined in order to do so for the sake of humanity. A post that he made was then retweeted by both Elon Musk and OpenAI's Sam Olman. characters who of course aren't frequently in agreement uh with Daario necessarily, but they both say in this instance he is right.

President Trump, however, doesn't think so. He took to True Social today, suggesting that the only control or guard rails that AI needs is a strong and smart president. It's a quote from him. Of course, we heard uh similar push back to the idea of slowing down the frontier from the president over the weekend when he was in Ireland for a golf tournament at one of his properties. Listen,

we're leading China in AI. We're the most sophisticated country in the world and frankly I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins and uh we could put guard rails, we could do this and that but I think you have a lot of negative forces and bringing it up that uh shouldn't be bringing it up.

So let's get more on this now as we turn to Jeff Mason, Bloomberg White House and Washington correspondent who was here with me in the DC studio today. So Jeff, we've heard this uh from the president before. he does not want to see uh China win this race that he thinks the US is leading right now. But is this in political alignment with the American electorate?

Well, not if people start getting really freaked out about these warnings. And I think people are getting there and certainly you've seen that in terms of a reaction in Washington from some of the lawmakers who are talking about wanting to do more regulation. Clearly, the industry is signaling some concerns. Yeah. Some pretty major concerns. When you start hearing about phrases like human extinction, that's very dramatic.

And yet, President Trump um if you stand back a little bit and think about how he thinks, he thinks about winning, right? Both as a businessman and as a politician and certainly as a president. And he sees this really as a competition with China, which he said um he said that to me actually last Thursday. I asked him about it on the tarmac in Dallas when you in the early hours after these warnings started coming out and he said he was not worried about uh these warnings and and he's just doubled down on that both in Ireland and in the Truth Social Post today.

And of course him suggesting that AI needs a lighter regulatory tr uh touch than some are pushing for would be in keeping with one of the things that he campaigned on when running for re-election again, which was deregulation, not imposing more of it.

Right. He's not into regulation generally, whether it's on AI or whether it's on climate change or whether it's on anything else that affects business. And that you're spot on to say is is consistent with who he is as a uh in terms of the policies that he cares about. This may be a much different thing though for him politically because again if the electorate starts getting worried and it ends up becoming a bifurcated approach between the Democrats and the Republicans and they're not there yet but it could get there if he ends up saying no Republicans are anti-regulation.

We're not going to step in on this. Uh you know if you you see alone you see just you see the response to data centers becoming a huge political topic. Um danger is also one that is likely to have an impact.

Well, and then there's the wider issue of affordability, which uh the president has suggested time and again is fake. He did so on the stage uh in Dallas uh just last week. and he took to True Social to talk about that uh in the last hour as well, Jeff, saying he hopes everyone realizes that price increases throughout America were caused by sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden administration, which of course hasn't been in place in almost 2 years since Trump took office in January of last year.

But he points specifically to oil and says once again, he's said this many times, that they will come oil prices will come down sharply as soon as the military conflict with Iran is over. And yet it clearly is not yet over. We're seeing a ramping up in hostilities in the Middle East with the Houthies as well, Saudi Arabia's East West pipeline getting uh hit by a drone and shutting it down over the weekend. And oil prices are on the march higher.

Could that potentially bring Trump around to the idea of a deal with Iran? Are we not there yet?

Well, um it's just so hard to say with him and and with this conflict. Certainly, he's very sensitive to the high cost of oil and the high cost of gasoline and the high cost of diesel. And you're seeing that sensitivity in his true social post today for sure. But he is making promises about prices coming down that he is not he has not demonstrated that he can keep and that is reflected in the fact that this war has gone on much longer than he suggested it would at the very beginning.

He said it would be a four to six week conflict. He's gone back and forth on whether he wants a deal, on whether Iran wants a deal, and now he's trying to blame the previous administration for the high prices, which let's be clear, inflation was absolutely an issue under Joe Biden.

It was,

but um it was coming down at the end of his term, and this is demonstrably President Donald Trump's economy right now. You've got both the the war and the tariffs having inflationary impacts and you can't just wish that away politically, even if that's what the president is trying to do.

Well, and you mentioned his sensitivity to diesel prices in particular, which of course hit uh a record. He says in large part that actually is due to the war between Russia and Ukraine and Ukraine going after Russian refineries. He said this in Ireland and doubled down on it today. Let's listen first to what the president said about uh the nec necessity of Ukraine stopping those attacks over the weekend. Mr. Zalinski has to do one thing.

He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia. Let him go after targets, but not diesel fuel because he's causing a shortage of diesel fuel. This isn't done by the Middle East. This is done by what's happening with Russia and Ukraine. So, we spoke to Mr. Zilinski about it. There are plenty of other targets. Don't hit diesel fuel because that's hurting that's hurting the world. Fast forward to this morning, Jeff and the president post on True Social that Ukraine has agreed not to hit Russian energy targets and Russia has agreed to do likewise.

Do we take that at face value?

Well, I'm waiting to hear the two of them say that. Number one. And number two, I think another way that you could hear the president's comments is what's happening in in uh with regard to diesel is happening in a conflict that I didn't start. So, don't blame me. Uh either way, the the impact on diesel prices certainly from Iran, but perhaps because of Russia, Ukraine as well, uh is hurting him politically because of the squeeze that is putting on so many aspects of the US economy and the global economy for that for that matter.

So he's again going to go back to the word sensitive. Um it's it's tricky for him to to just kind of blow off and and explain away. All right, Jeff Mason covering the White House for us here at B
