Live from the guest 2026 conference here in Bangkok, this is Insight with Hasslinda Amen. Along with AI, energy security is back at the center of the global conversation. Oil prices are climbing again after Saudi Arabia shut a key pipeline following drone attacks and a planned meeting between Iran and Gulf states was postponed. Bernstein is warning crude could surge to as much as $150 a barrel if Middle East supply disruptions persist.

We have some exclusive interviews ahead this hour. Pakistan guest sport chairman Igbal Z Ahmed on demand and the implications of higher prices for import dependent economies. And later, US Department of Energy Deputy Secretary James Danley will be joining us as Washington grapples with supply, market stability, and tough geopolitical backdrop. But first, here are the other top stories we are tracking today. Asian stocks and US futures retreat after AI leaders including anthropics Ader open AI Sam Alman and Elon Musk back calls to slow development setting up a clash with investors and the Trump administration.

We're leading China in AI. We're most sophisticated country in the world and frankly I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins and uh we can put guard rails. we could do this and that, but I think you have a lot of negative forces that are bringing it up that uh shouldn't be bringing it up.

President Trump dismissed calls to slow AI development, saying the United States must stay ahead of China. Meanwhile, President Shu is expanding Beijing's push for open-source AI through new bricksled initiatives. And the leaders of countries including Russia, China, India, and Iran project a united front at the brick summit in New Delhi, calling for restraint in the Middle East while criticizing US sanctions and tariffs.

Asia stocks in retreat as US AI companies call for a slowdown in the technologies development. Equities also facing pressure as oil prices edge higher. Let's check in on how markets are fairing with Averil Hong in the Lion City. Averil, how hard hit are Asian stocks today?

Yeah, pretty badly. I mean the US AI CEOs talking about this slowdown is raising concerns that we could see a decline in AI spending and in the region Japan South Korea getting the hardest hit. You saw the Cosby at 1.3.7% down. Overall it's an extension of the losses we already saw on Friday when they were rattled by these concerns of higher yields and of course that deep seek new model showing more efficient use of memory.

That being said, there are some that also highlight that there's demand that still outstrips supply when it comes to chips, when it comes to computing in the AI industry. And there are also others that point out that this AI slowdown might actually be a good thing for companies in the industry because it gives the companies involved more time to extract the returns from the infrastructure that is already being built.

Now, it's not just about AI and stocks split the board. It's also about the Fed pricing. Following on from a hot inflation print, we're seeing the pricing for a hike this week going up to almost 90% thereabouts. And of course, the hot CPI, we saw the underlying inflation rising more than expected. The Fed uh chief Kevin Walsh is not just under pressure in spite of what Trump might say to hike this week. It's also about how it's going to be increasingly difficult for him to do a oneand done especially when you look at oil prices rising in this manner with brand really not far from the 110 level.

H

Averil thank you. Oil prices meantime under pressure after Saudi Arabia closed its east west pipeline in another major blow to energy markets. The route which came under attack last week was a key alternative to the straight of Harmuz for oil exports. It comes as Oman says a meeting with Iran and Gulf nations over the waterway has also been delayed. For more Bloom's Middle East correspondent Abir Abu Omar joins us now from Dubai.

Abair intensifying fighting in the Middle East.

Yeah, good morning. Intensifying fightings. Arguably, one would say that the situation right now, which is really neither war nor peace, could be presumed as worse than when this situation has started over 6 months ago at this point. So, two reasons, as you have mentioned in the intro, contributing to the rise that we're seeing in brand crude prices. That is the east west pipeline in Saudi Arabia being shut. The government did say that this is a precautionary measure after attacks on Thursday claimed by the Houthis and possibly from Iraq as well.

And so after that pipeline was shut, of course that is the pipeline Hinda that we've spoken about multiple times, the one that Saudi Arabia had resorted to uh in the midst of Hermuz being shut down. Now already Saudi Arabia's oil exports in August were at about 3 million barrels. That is the lowest level recorded since 2017. And so this is set to impact even more energy prices. And then of course the other thing contributing to the rise in energy prices across the board that we're seeing is the postponement of that meeting, excuse me, that meeting that was set to happen in Haman between Iran and GCC officials.

We've already heard from Bahin that said that it would not take part in this meeting and then some parts of the delay were because of a lack of reaching a consensus. Of course, this is according to Bad Busi, the foreign minister of Roman. And so when that meeting is expected to happen, what exactly will be discussed, we just don't know. But we know what the ramifications are and they're quite dangerous once again. Has Linda.

So Abber, where do we go from here? Negotiations between Iran and Washington are no longer happening and now no talks between Iran and the Gulf States.

Yeah, that is the billion dollar question, isn't it? Everyone wants to know what happens from here. It does look like we're in a state of limbo. We're in a state of plateau once again with the wider negotiations nowhere in sight. President Trump of course reiterating his remarks that Iran wants a deal badly, although Iran not coming to the table and suggesting uh by any means that it's ready to come back to the negotiating table.

Iran saying that any claim that it's seeking a nuclear weapon is pure propaganda. It did say through of course the foreign minister spokesperson that any deal or any meeting between itself and GCC nations was not going to lead or probably not going to lead to a full opening to the straight of Hermas. And so the meeting was postponed we found out overnight. And so where does where does this whole thing take us? We just don't know at this point Linda but this war that again had started over six months ago is nowhere the the end of that is nowhere in sight.

And of course, President Trump also suggesting that the end is near. It could happen before the midterm elections. It could happen after. So, some contradicting remarks there once again suggesting that uh we will have to wait and see again.

Again, a lack of clarity. Abar, thank you. Blame's Middle East correspondent Abu Omar for us. Now, energy security set to dominate discussions at Gastak here in Bangkok. Joining us exclusively, Igbal Ahmed, chairman of Pakistan Gasport. The company owns the largest gas terminal in Pakistan. Mr. Igbal, good to have you with us. Talk to us about the situation in Pakistan. Just how bad is it given that gas prices have doubled since the start of the Iran war?

Thank you very much for inviting me. Pakistan is undergoing a major crisis. Uh in good times we were importing up to 10 to 12 LG cargos from Qatar from ENI. These supplies have been cut down to three last month and so far I think only two cargos are planned this month. So there's load shedding because uh primary reli reliance on power generation is through LNG. uh that has having a major impact. Pricing is going to have a major impact and uh of course it will hit the economy very badly.

But I don't see this goi
