Could Trump Really Just Give Everyone $5000?
For the past few months, and with the midterms looming ever larger, Republican strategists have been worrying about one thing: affordability. Inflation has stuck stubbornly above the Federal Reserve's 2% target since Trump took office, and only looks likely to rise higher, given that Trump now apparently expects the war in Iran to continue until at least the midterms.

The associated disruption to global energy markets has already pushed crude oil prices up to well above $100 a barrel at the time of writing. And because the cost of refining crude oil into usable products like gasoline and diesel has jumped to record highs, prices at the pump, which have a direct impact on headline inflation numbers, are even higher. US diesel prices, for instance, just topped $6 a gallon for the first time ever, and are near $8 a gallon in places like California.

Unsurprisingly, given its centrality as an electoral issue and the fact that Trump obviously campaigned in 2024 promising to bring down prices, this has all done damage to both his own approval ratings and the Republican Party's prospects in the upcoming midterms. However, a couple of days ago at the GOP's midterm convention in Dallas, we finally found out how Trump planned to address voters' concerns about affordability, namely by promising every adult American a $5,000 dividend if the Republicans win both the House and the Senate.
