I'm ed college President Trump and senior white House officials are doubling down on economic pressures against Iran in an effort to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Nathan Bomi covers business news for Axios. I think the probably most likely avenue, if you're going to be extremely aggressive, would you be sanction the friend of the friend? And essentially maybe you know someone who does business with Iran, who isn't currently affected?
Obviously, China, for example, would be the first country that comes to mind doing business with Iran and through energy, for example. Could they hit that? That would, of course, be another escalation in the U.S. trade war with China. Axios reporter Nathan Bowman Bloomberg this week and Treasury Secretary Scott Benson says more announcements will be coming next week. But the plan is part of A12 punch that includes the continued blockade of Iran's ports.

Persistent concerns over gas, food and housing costs are complicating the president's message ahead of the November midterms. Alibaba's AI models are racking up more downloads than Meta and Google. Bloomberg's Monica Rix reports. Alibaba's open weight AI models have racked up more than 3 billion global downloads in the past six months, becoming the world's number one artificial intelligence model. Open models can be downloaded, customized and used as building blocks for new AI products.
Which is what makes Quinn so popular. Alibaba says the model is open sourced, more than 460 models, and its ecosystem has spawned more than 300,000 derivatives. That's more than Meta and Google so far this year, and now Chinese developers are looking to bridge the gap between other models in the U.S., including open AI and anthropic. Paramount Skydance says its pending merger with Warner Brothers has satisfied all regulatory clearances required under the deal.
We get that story from Bloomberg's Charlie Pelly. In a statement, the media and entertainment giant said the eight month review process spanned 68 jurisdictions, including the United States, the European Union, and China, and regulators have consistently found no basis to prevent the transaction from moving forward, even though federal regulators like the U.S. Department of Justice of greenlit the deal. Paramount is still facing an antitrust lawsuit from a group of 12 states led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta.
Iran and Oman appear to be edging closer to a deal on how the Strait of Hormuz should be managed to, agreeing on routes through the key waterway. That's proved a major stumbling block in efforts to end the almost six months war between the Islamic Republic and the U.S.. The state run DFI press says the finalization of a shipping that forms part of a broader accord to govern traffic through the Strait and constitutes an independent arrangement between the two states that will uphold their sovereignty and ensure the safe transit of vessels.
Tropical Storm Lala is threatening more than two feet of rain as it moves towards Hawaii's Big Island, and could become the first hurricane to hit the island in more than a century, with winds near 65mph. La la is forecast to become a category one hurricane when it approaches the Big Island Saturday. A hurricane warning is in effect for the island, according to documents seen by Bloomberg News. Anthropic is telling prospective investors its second quarter revenue jumped at least 14 fold versus the same period a year ago.
The claw chat bot maker reported a preliminary revenue figure of more than $11.5 billion in its latest completed quarter, compared to $787 million in the corresponding period in 2025. Five people were wounded in a shooting involving multiple suspects at Virginia State University early Saturday, prompting a campus lockdown and police investigation. According to the university's website, residence halls opened for students a week ago and classes resumed Monday.
