Carol Messer along with Tim Stenick. Let's get to some stocks on the move with us.
Denise Seikova, Bloomberg News cross asset reporter. She joins us.
I'm so happy to join you guys. Um, Nike is down. We've been talking about 24 hours.
Interesting. It's moving as we speak.
It's moving as it speak after hours. It's the futures. It's pretty much 24/7 trading. Uh, but Nike reported earnings after hours. It was better than expected results, but still we're seeing a pretty bad reaction in the stocks. Uh, we're seeing some cautious commentary from executives and that was enough to trigger. Uh it's down more than 3%.
Down 4% as we speak.
Oh, down 4% as we speak. Yeah, it tumbled a few other percentage points. The stock is declined more than 36% this year. Um so pretty rough uh start of the year. Sales were uh 11 billion for the fiscal quarter, surpassing the average estimate. Earnings per share were 72 cents, far exceeding expectations. So we're seeing all those good uh company fundamentals delivering but nevertheless investors have high bar. There has been this big transition for the last two years under um the CEO Hill uh and the company has been progressing but there has been so many uh different confusions um and different problems uh that investors have a pretty high bar.
Yeah, the CEO um yes indeed making some comments um actually in the earning statement he said that Nike is encouraged by progress in products design for sports. Uh Matt found the company's outgoing chief financial officer said the company's efforts to sell its products for full price remain challenge. Yes, that's a bit of a bummer.
That says a lot. And they had a lot of controversy. They had like a Boston Marathon ad that got pulled. Then some of the World Cup inventory is being hard to sell and getting that comment as well that full price items are hard to sell. You know, there are a lot of pressures, a lot of controversies.
Those team USA jerseys are moving quickly though and those are Nike
jersey I guess. So I guess
Punam Goyel of Bloomberg Intelligence saying on Bloomberg Intelligence earlier today um well talking about the China story ahead of these earnings, but there are questions about are they going to still have an investor day uh given that there's a new CFO.
Ah well that's interesting with the investor day. I don't know if they've announced anything yet. I didn't see it in the terminal yet, but
uh I did not
I didn't see an announcement for that. Yeah,
not yet. So, stand by.
Okay, this next I'm obsessed with this story and I think everybody who has a smartphone is
Oh, yes. Yes, yes, yes.
There could be some competition.
There could be competition for Verizon Communications and AT&T. The stocks were down. Verizon VZ is the ticker was down 3% today. AT&T the ticker is T is down 5% today. And it's coming off news from SpaceX. SpaceX held executive level talks about partnering on a consumer mobile fine offering. You know, SpaceX has been really disrupting a lot of like the wireless business. And I'm sure
Elon disrupting.
He's disrupting shakes it all up, right?
Look at look at the stock price. Um, so Charter, the largest home internet provider in the US, could run some of SpaceX phone traffic through its groundbased internet infrastructure. Um, so the company already offers Starlink mobile service as a $10 month add-on on T-Mobile Inc. But then the thing is I think SpaceX can go directly and offer it to consumers. So they don't need T-Mobile. They don't need AT&T. They don't need Verizon.
And we can see that reflected in the stock price. Clearly investors are pretty bullish on SpaceX and not so bullish on Verizon.
I got to tell you this could be a gamecher. more competition and also could mean that these companies are able to uh or are forced to charge less if there's another competitor.
Bring on the competition.
I don't want to blow up Mike McKe's spot, but he was on this very cool
Yes.
vacation last week in a very rural
part of this country where typically you wouldn't have any sort of cell phone service. Yeah.
And one of the guys on his trip had brought and I was like, "Oh, it's must have been so nice to be unplugged and get away from it all." And somebody brought Starling.
No more
and they could all And
you can it's portable
and it's like somebody brought Starling.
All right. Can we do the reveal? Like when we were out in Southampton and not great service and our whole crew doing our broadcast did it via Starlink.
It is so good. Even on airplanes like you can see how how much better is the Wi-Fi now compared to like two years ago. It's just crazy.
Game changer. Okay. Um time for one more.
Strategy. We've been talking a lot about strategy. It had a great day yesterday, but it only lasted one day. Uh, strategy shares fell more than 6% today. Analysts are cutting their price tag. We had both TD Cowan cut their price tag from 400 to 260. That's a pretty big cut. Uh, and then Kanor Genuinity cut their price tag that uh from 160 to 130. Nevertheless, the company says that they may sell up to 1 point more than 1 billion of Bitcoin.
I think clearly yesterday that was enough relief for investors but the direction of travel is not great. Uh the stock has been selling off for months. It's down about 40% year to date and it's crypto winter and it's a prolonged crypto winter.
