Revenue was $41 million in 2023, $386 million in 2024 and $4,585 million in 2025. In the first half of 2026 alone it was $16,286 million, roughly fourteen times the $1,163 million from the first half of 2025.

The valuation and the $80 billion net loss will get the headlines. For founders, the metric definitions, the expense table and a few lines in the business section have more to teach. Here are five.

1. Net Revenue Retention of ~900%, and 250 Customers Paying $10M+ a Year

Anthropic reports Net Revenue Retention of approximately 900% as of September 30, 2026.

The definition matters. It’s current-quarter revenue from qualified customers divided by the same customers’ revenue in the quarter a year earlier, and it excludes Claude Pro and Max subscribers because fixed-price subscriptions don’t reflect expansion and contraction. That means the usage business grew 9x inside its existing customers in a year.

The expansion shows up at the top of the customer base. As of September 30, 2026, Anthropic had more than 11,900 customers with $100,000+ of TTM revenue, more than 1,900 with $1 million+, and approximately 250 with $10 million+.

Anthropic calls its model “pay-for-intelligence”: customers pay for usage metered in tokens, priced by the model they choose. As the models improve, customers send them more work, and spend rises with the work.

What to take from it: Anthropic priced on usage from day one, and 250 customers now pay it more than $10 million a year. Few software line items at any company are that size. That money is coming from labor and new-project budgets, and a seat-based price would have capped it at whatever the software budget allowed.

2. Cost Per Task Fell 40%, and Compute Went From 201% of Revenue to 55%

Anthropic keeps lowering what customers pay per task, and its compute ratio keeps falling.

Claude Opus 5.5 cut customer costs per task by roughly 40% versus Claude Opus 5, and the filing says lower costs per task drive more usage, which drives broader adoption.

Compute and infrastructure cost $2,334 million in the first half of 2025 and $8,945 million in the first half of 2026, against revenue of $1,163 million and $16,286 million. That’s compute at 201% of revenue a year ago and 55% today. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, revenue grew 1,368% year over year while compute and infrastructure expenses grew 300%.

A note for anyone modeling this: Anthropic books compute and infrastructure as an operating expense rather than cost of revenue, so the prospectus doesn’t show a conventional gross margin. The compute line includes training and research as well as serving customers.

What to take from it: Anthropic handed customers a 40% lower cost per task in one model generation, and over the same twelve months compute fell from 2x revenue to about half of it.

3. Sales, Marketing and Partnerships Went From $120M to $3.2B, Now Larger Than Payroll

Sales, marketing, and partnerships was $120 million in the first half of 2025 and $3,168 million in the first half of 2026. Personnel in the same half was $3,152 million. That’s 26x year over year, and it went from about 10% of revenue to about 19%. It’s the steepest relative increase in the expense table.

The business section shows where the money goes. Anthropic says much of Claude’s diffusion has been organic, and it adds go-to-market and Applied AI teams plus distribution partnerships that put Claude inside customers’ existing stacks. Applied AI teams include forward-deployed engineers who build custom solutions on the customer’s own systems. Partners include SIs like Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG and PwC, plus data platforms like Salesforce and Snowflake. Anthropic also just launched Ode with Anthropic, an AI services company built with private equity firms to bring Claude to mid-sized companies.

What to take from it: with developers already pulling Claude in on their own, Anthropic still spent $3.2 billion in six months on forward-deployed engineers, SI partnerships, marketing and a new services company for the mid-market. AI startups planning a purely product-led enterprise push should look hard at that line.

4. $6.6 Million in Revenue Per Employee, Up From $1.4 Million a Year Ago

Anthropic reports TTM revenue per employee of over $6.6 million as of September 30, 2026, compared to $1.4 million a year earlier. The filing credits talent density, an efficient go-to-market, and how heavily its own teams use Claude in their work.

Personnel was $3,152 million in the first half of 2026, and that includes $2.2 billion of stock-based compensation. Roughly 70% of the personnel line is equity, so cash payroll is small next to first-half revenue that annualizes to more than $32 billion.

What to take from it: revenue grew about 14x in a year while revenue per employee grew about 4.7x, so Anthropic added people far more slowly than revenue. We run SaaStr the same way with 3 humans and 20+ agents in production.

5. Claude Code Came First, and Cowork Is Ramping Faster

The filing calls Claude Code the clearest example of what Anthropic calls Virtual Collaborators, and says that for enterprise use cases its launch was comparable in impact to the first widely adopted conversational AI assistants.

Anthropic then took the same architecture to everyone else. The filing describes developers as internal champions for new technology, and says non-technical teams are increasingly adopting Claude Code and Claude Cowork for their own workflows. As of September 30, 2026, Cowork adoption outpaced what Claude Code achieved at the equivalent point after its research preview, and in September 2026 Anthropic began merging Cowork and Claude.ai into one app.

What to take from it: developers used the agent loop in Claude Code for about a year before Anthropic handed the same engine to finance, marketing and ops teams in Cowork, and the second product ramped faster than the first.

5 More Interesting Learnings

  • Most of the $80.7B net loss is non-cash. $72,388 million came from the change in fair value of convertible notes, derivatives and SAFEs, which rise in value as Anthropic’s own valuation rises. The operating loss for the half was $693 million. On Anthropic’s non-GAAP measures, adjusted operating income was $1,618 million in the first half of 2026, a 10% adjusted operating margin, versus (159)% a year earlier.
  • Anthropic sells through the clouds and holds the contract. It runs joint go-to-market with AWS, GCP and Azure, contracts directly with the customer, and pays each cloud a fee, which it says avoids channel conflict and lets it set pricing.
  • $131.7B in cash and short-term investments. As of June 30, 2026, Anthropic had raised $141.1 billion in total and held $112.4 billion in cash plus $19.3 billion in short-term investments.
  • Public shareholders won’t control the board. One Class F share held by the seven co-founders’ LLC carries 50.1% of general voting power, and the Long-Term Benefit Trust elects a board majority. Anthropic also contributed 5% of fully diluted shares to its Public Benefit Fund, and each co-founder pledged 80% of their personal equity to philanthropy.
  • 2025 carried a $1.5B legal charge. The Bartz settlement, from the authors’ copyright class action over books used in training, hit 2025 and doesn’t recur in the first half of 2026. Excluding it, 2025’s operating loss was about $6.6B instead of $8.1B.
