Trump, Xi Spotlight AI Rivalry
中美高层会晤落地并达成具体贸易休战延期事实,直接影响宏观政策预期与相关资产定价,建议关注后续关税谈判进展。
Live at the United Nations General Assembly with another fascinating conversation. It's been a week full of them and providing ever more context for what's happening here in Washington. As the president of the United States meets with President XI in the summit at the white House, officially now underway. Thank you for being with us here on the Thursday edition of Balance of Power. I'm Joe Matthew in Washington as we welcome our global television audience to the program today.
Indeed, the summit underway right now. And on top of that, we have breaking news from the white House in that the reporters who had been kicked off the campus and in fact, took the white House to court to restore their press access. They are back at the white House now. A red headline on the terminal a short time ago, as the Trump administration confirms that media access has been restored for the likes of CNN, MBS now, and the reporters who were stripped of their press credentials over what the president described as fake news.
We're going to have much more from the white House, more on the summit, more on this court battle, which is not over yet, by the way, with the white House. And we check in coming up with Bloomberg's Tyler Kendall. She's on the North Lawn of the white House today. And some important voices we'll hear from this hour. The Democratic senator from Colorado, Michael Bennet, on the Intel Committee, will join us, along with Republican Senator Steve Daines of Montana, a longtime hand in US-China relations will be with us as well as this summit unfolds.
And we'll spend some time with Miriam Vogel, the CEO of Equal Eye, with what could be the most important agenda item in discussion at this summit. We start, as always, though, on Wall Street. Let's get to world headquarters in New York with Charlie Pellet. More on the Thursday trade trolley. How's it go right now? Looking at a little bit of optimism here, Joe, Matthew and I stress a little bit of optimism because we got the S&P 500 index.
Yes in the green. But the key takeaway little change right now up by just under one tenth of 1% I got to keep in mind a little the worst level of the day. We saw the S&P down by 6/10 of 1%. So a turnaround really in the past 45 minutes or so. With the S&P now higher by three points, looking at a gain of just under one tenth of 1%. But to be sure, swinging between gains and losses, the Dow down 3/10 of 1%. Nasdaq flat on the day.
The Nasdaq 100 index also a little changed up by under one tenth of 1%. So the S&P did erase its decline after Reuters reported that the U.S. and Iranian negotiators are exploring a phased path out of the war that would involve Tehran reopening the waterway and Washington lifting its economic blockade. Two year, 4.88%, ten year, 5.13%. The 30 year 5.43% gold down 5, the ounce down by about 3/10 of 1%. West Texas Intermediate crude 9399 a barrel, up 2%.
Barrel of Brent crude, up by 2.2% 105 34 barrel. I'm Charlie Pellet and that is a Bloomberg business splash Charlie Pellet live in New York. Thank you. We'll get back to Charlie in about 20 minutes time with more on the Thursday trade. We are zeroed in on interest rates and oil. Today, of course, though, we have seen much worse numbers will track obviously, what's happening in the market straight through the close and have full details for you on the late edition of Balance of Power on your drive home.
That's at 5 p.m. eastern time. We start, though, at the white House, where President Trump and President XI kicked off the summit in official form after she arrived last evening at Joint Base Andrews, complete with a greeting from the president of the United States, something we've never seen Trump do. Full military reception on the South Lawn. Earlier today, the band was playing on the roof of the West Wing, and we did hear remarks from these two.
None of it was televised, though, because at that point, press credentials had not yet been restored to those reporters who were kicked off campus. CNN, Ms.. Now in Politico, if you're with us on Bloomberg TV, we're seeing some images now, uh, from the, uh, arrival ceremony last evening at Joint Base Andrews. Let's go to the white House now with our Washington correspondent Tyler Kendall, who has been watching all of this unfold.
And it does appear. Tyler, you've got a little more company today on Pebble Beach. What's the latest? Uh, well, Joe, we got a confirmation in the form of a legal filing from the Trump administration that they have indeed restored access to the journalists from the three impacted outlets after President Trump moved to bar them from coverage of the white House. I have to say, I was actually standing here in it, and I saw the journalists walk in to the white House through the northwest gates where we normally go through.
But it was when the camera operators and their camera equipment was able to be cleared into the white House, that there was actually a big round of applause here on the white House North Lawn, as many members of the white House press corps, uh, were standing there in solidarity. Now, we should say that this doesn't necessarily mean that the legal battle is over. The judge's ruling here is only on a temporary basis, barring the Trump administration from barring these journalists access well, the outlets lawsuit proceeds through through the legal system.
We've had some news come out of this visit so far. Tyler, I'd like to ask you about deliverables. To the extent that we know about them, an extension of a trade truce is what we have to get our hands around today, but it's much shorter in duration than either side wanted, isn't it? It is a two month extension which will bring the deadline to January 10th. We should say that the expectation had been that it would be somewhere between 3 and 6 months.
We had the U.S. Trade Representative, Jamison Greer, tell Bloomberg Television that this is just days ago, but even that is shorter than what we know Beijing was pushing for. China had wanted to see this trade truce extended for two years, which would cover the duration of the Trump administration. That goes to show that there is still these brewing tensions underneath. What is a focus on stability in the US-China relationship during this visit by Xi Jinping.
We know the U.S. is pushing for some other deliverables to come out of this, including further Chinese purchase commitments. When it comes to agricultural products, China is only about halfway there in terms of purchase commitments related to soybeans for this year. They are also falling short when it comes to another promise to purchase an additional 7 billion worth of goods in the agricultural sector. We'll have to see what else we may get.
Perhaps the firmest deliverable that we will have is that the two sides commit to meet again. We are still waiting for confirmation that President Trump will travel to China for the apex summer summit in November, or that XI Jinping will come back to the U.S. for the G-20 summit in December that's being held in Miami. Those are some of the tangibles that we're looking for here. Whether or not we get into some of those more thorny issues, whether that be export licenses related to critical minerals or China's imports of Iranian crude, remains to be seen.
All right. Tyler also questions about why some of the initial comments were about. I will see if there's any talk of a framework agreement, Deconfliction line or anything else that's been reported ahead of this summit. Tyler Kendall, thank you so much. Bloomberg Washington correspondent on the North Lawn of the white House. There's also a big question about rare earths very high on Washington's list here. But we want to walk through all of this with Senator Michael Bennet, who I told you was going to be joining us today, his triumphant return to Bloomberg TV and radio.
