Bloomberg Audio Studios podcasts radio news. This is the Bloomberg Daybure podcast. Good morning. It's Wednesday the 23rd of September. I'm Caroline Hepka in London. Coming up today, President Donald Trump hails very good talks with Iranian envoys in New York, reviving fragile hopes for a new diplomatic offramp. World leaders jostle over AI safety as the US rejects calls for an international pact to manage the risks.

UK Prime Minister Andy Bernham is dealt a blow though as Trump slams the deal over the Chaos Islands. Plus, tackling divisions. Why football is at the heart of Morocco's upcoming elections. Let's start with a roundup of our top stories. President Trump says that US officials had very good talks with Iranian envoys in New York. His comments have revived hopes for a diplomatic solution to the conflict. But this just hours after he threatened to annihilate the country earlier yesterday.

Speaking to reporters at the United Nations General Assembly, Trump says Iran has a decision meant to make.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to do it. It's greatness, potential greatness or obliteration.

Two choices. I mean it's in one case it's obliteration and the other alternative is potential greatness. It could be a great country.

President Trump speaking about a deal there to journalists at the United Nations as he also met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zalinsky yesterday afternoon. He also signed a security deal with Denmark and Greenland, ending a dispute over the region and announcing that the US will start building two very major military bases on the island. Donald Trump and Andy Burn have also exchanged warm words at their first face-to-face meeting despite growing differences between Britain and the US.

The UK prime minister says that the two did find common ground on ending the war in the Middle East.

It was a very encouraging meeting. We've established a good connection in the discussions we've had and that very much came through today. A lot of common ground on the cost of living. We agreed around the conflict in the Middle East and the importance of bringing an end to it.

The meeting was seen as a diplomatic test for Burnham after Britain refused to join the US war against Iran and took a tougher stance on Israeli settlements. And even as Trump praised Bernham as someone that he could do business with, he criticized Britain's deal over the Chaos Islands. Hours later at the UN, Bernham called for greater regulation of artificial intelligence, pitching Britain as an honest broker on an issue where he and Trump sharply disagree.

Despite the warnings from Andy Bernham, from political leaders, and from AI labs, President Trump rejected calls for what he called a globalist scheme to manage AI risks. Speaking at the UN General Assembly gathering, President Trump brushed off concerns about the dangers of frontier models going rogue. His comments came despite UN Secretary General Antonio Gutirez and his warnings about the technology. Our future will be shaped by how we address four great tests of power.

The power over war and peace. The power that concentrates wealth and drives inequality. The power fueling climate chaos and war on nature. And the power unleashed by artificial intelligence. So that was the UN Secretary General Antonio Gutirez there as leaders from France and Canada and the leading AI labs have urged caution. Trump is preparing to welcome China's President Xi Jinping to Washington this evening for his first visit to the US capital since 2015.

With the AI race expected to be a major fault line in US China discussions, an influential parliamentary group is telling politicians to stop blaming the budget watchdog here in Britain for tough decisions. The UK Treasury Select Committee says that now is not the time to weaken the independence of the Office for Budget Responsibility. Blueber's James Walk has more.

Don't shoot the messenger. That's how the Treasury Select Committee sums up its own report into the OBR. Britain is 5 weeks out from an autumn budget where many expect tough choices on taxes and spending. The committee warns politicians may be tempted to blame the independent fiscal watchdog or even change the rules when those choices get difficult. They want ministers to be looking at a 10-year economic forecast. But with Britain on its sixth prime minister in a decade, the challenge of getting governments to think in the long term seems clear.

In London, James Walco, Bloomberg Radio. So that's in the UK. Meanwhile, when we think about the markets, traders are loading up on hedges for a shallower Federal Reserve rate hiking cycle than expected. Interest rate swaps now reflect expectations for three quarter point rate rises by next June. But this hawish consensus is leading some to shield themselves by using options linked to the policy sensitive secured overnight financing rate.

Demand has been building for calls tied to March sofa futures indicating growing appetite for protection against a less aggressive Fed. Those are our top stories for you today. Well, in terms of the markets, the focus really is on oil prices. The idea of uh more diplomacy, the fact that Saudi Arabia is trying to open the East West pipeline and restore oil exports in the coming days has meant the oil prices are down significantly.

In fact, Brank Food is well below $19842, down 8/10 of 1% and that's also meant the rethinking bond markets, the worries around inflation. If that can be resolved, maybe that brings down inflation. So you have seen also Aussie and Kiwi bonds uh rallying, yields coming down, but no cash US treasuries trading right now because Japan is closed. We did see the NASDAQ 100 hit a record high close yesterday. Stock futures for the US and European markets also looking quite positive.

US 50 futures are up by 3/10en of 1%. Those are the markets. Okay, in a moment we're going to talk more about Burnham in New York, his first major foreign policy steps. Plus, what is at stake in Morocco's elections ahead of hosting the World Cup in 2030. But something else has caught my eye. Often does this time of the morning. Mark German strikes again with a scoop about Apple developing a screenless health and fitness tracker.

No, no, it's not the watch. It's different to that. Apparently, um, the prototype, it looks like a single band and there's no screen on it. It's in very early phase, but Mark German has been talking about this and even if it came out, it wouldn't be released until about 2028. And Apple is also sort of rethinking all of its wearable and watch lineup. I will probably see tweaks to the Apple Watch coming in 2027. Apple is already adding features from fitness trackers like um heart rate tracking and metrics that maybe uh could give you your so-called biological age.

Look, I think it's a great scoop from Mark German as always over in the US. I wonder whether a fitness tracker helps to motivate you, get you moving in the day, maybe detect issues with your heartbeat, I suppose, or is it just dodgy data and with the side helping of privacy concerns? I often wonder in any way in any case the companies that make those fitness trackers are certainly watching because you had shares in Garmin dropping um and it would also be a rival to the smart ring.

Have you seen anyone wearing those? Or Whoop, which is the other big fitness tracker as well in that space. Um I'm going to put a link to Mark German's story, latest story about Apple I should say, in our podcast show notes. Now, Prime Minister Andy Bernham met for the first face-to-face meeting with President Trump yesterday. The US President saying some warm things uh about the UK leader. Of course, this is the fourth that President Trump has dealt with.

But on the more substantive issues like the UK leading on an effort around AI standards, um the UK doesn't look to have US support. Our UK correspondent Lizzie Burton joins us now. Lizzy, good morning. This w
