These are very unusual comments from a US president about the status of Northern Ireland expressing this clear desire for a united Ireland. What's the reaction been in Ireland but also from the British government?

Yeah, I mean those remarks are pretty unprecedented. Um, mostly because the US is a co guarantor of the kind of landmark peace agreement that largely ended sectarian violence between British unionists and Irish nationalists, um, in the region. Dublin has sort of sought to downplay the remarks. Um, the Irish prime minister doesn't really want to wade into what is a very sensitive debate right now. Um, and Trump's comments also came after the UK prime minister, Andy Burnham, had already said that this discussion is effectively off the table right now.

Um, and those comments were reiterated by his spokesperson over the weekend. Um, they're quite sensitive because only the UK, as part of this landmark Good Friday agreement, can actually, um, can actually call a border poll on whether to reunite, um, Northern Ireland, the UK region, with the Republic of Ireland. Um, and the UK has basically said that we're not ready for that. Yeah. You know, there's not a clear majority in favour of that in Northern Ireland right now.

It's true that there probably isn't, um, a majority in favor of that right now. And as Trump kind of alludes to, if there was to be a border poll like he would like, um, right now, it would cause a lot of instability. Um, across the region, in the UK, across the EU and in the Republic of Ireland as well, it would create, um, a lot of problems, even though he said, um, he doesn't want to cause problems.

Yeah, certainly would be an extremely complex move, as highlighted by the central place that Northern Ireland played in the Brexit debate as well. Now, President Trump also capped off this visit by announcing that he would remove tariffs on Irish whiskey. How important is that to the sector. Yeah. And you know, he announced this to um, kind of big applause on his own golf course, which is hosting the Irish Open. And you know, there had been kind of protests around his visit, but he seemed to be very much welcomed, um, on his own course.

And, you know, at the end of the tournament, he kind of stood up and announced that he was going to remove the 10% tariffs on Irish whiskey. And that is a huge boon for the Irish whiskey sector because, well, a it's, you know, one of Ireland's most important historic and largest indigenous industries. Um, but also the industry has been beset with a ton of problems in recent years, including higher energy costs, higher labor costs, um, waning demand.

So removing this tariff is, um, definitely seen as a positive step for the sector, especially because the sector competes a lot with the UK. That includes whiskey that comes from Scotland and Northern Ireland. Um, which wasn't subject to this same tariff which was putting Irish whiskey up, uh, kind of comparative disadvantage. So it's a huge boon for the sector. But also it's kind of unclear what happens to tariffs, um, on other alcohol that was part of this kind of 10% tariff that the US had imposed on the EU, you know, kind of things like, uh, of spirits or French wine.
