AI Leaders Call For Development Slowdown as Safety Fears Mount
AI核心企业高管集体发声并明确IPO时间表变动,直接冲击科技板块估值逻辑与资金流向,需重点关注相关标的波动。
Live from Brussels. This is Bloomberg Daybreak Europe. I'm Stephen Carroll with your top stories. Hitting the brakes. Top us AI bosses call for a development slowdown as safety fears grow. Tech stocks come under pressure across the globe. The energy crunch deepens. Oil and gas prices jump as Saudi Arabia shuts a major crude pipeline following attacks. Plus, too close to call. Sweden's centre left opposition maintains a lead of just three seats and the tightest election result in the country's history.
A very good morning and welcome to our first show together from Brussels. Great to have you with us this morning. Let's get straight into what's moving markets there today as we're looking at that selloff in tech shares impacting stocks around the globe. We've got shares lower on the MSCI Asia Pacific Index. As we've been thinking about the impact that could have on the chipmakers like SK Hynix and Samsung much lower and trading as well.
SoftBank shares also slumping in Japan. After some arguments moping. I said their IPO won't happen this year. So that's the picture. Thinking about the Europeans, actually, we've got higher energy prices combined with our tax rate and NASDAQ futures also trading lower this morning as well, down over 1%. If we flip the board we can look at the energy story. That's the other big story that we're watching on markets today.
We've got energy prices higher in terms of oil prices today. Brent crude hovering around $107 a mark as we're looking, as well as European gas futures sharply higher going into this week at a time when storage is going to be the key focus going into the winter season. So that's the Dutch CTF benchmark for European natural gas prices. We've also got treasuries holding out to much of that moves on Friday after a higher than expected inflation print.
So we are looking at treasuries very close to that 5% handle on the ten year US Treasury. If we get into the big risk event this week, of course, it's a central bank mega week. We've got the fed decision on Wednesday kicking us off the move in terms of the potential for a hike after that. Harsher than expected to say CPI print on Friday. So we have got nearly 90% chances of a rate hike priced in by traders at the moment.
That's the big focus for Marcus. We've also got a decision from the BOE not expecting a move there on the Bank of Japan on Friday as well. We are expecting an interest rate hike to and that's after of course, the recent strengthening we've seen in the yen as well. That's all to come. Let's get you set up for the day on the week ahead. And. Calls for a slowdown in AI development along with climbing energy prices are hitting stocks and futures across the globe this morning.
Let's see how Asian markets are faring with April Hong and Singapore. Hi everyone. Hi Steve. And we are seeing those elevated yields, higher oil prices ie CEOs warning about tapping the brakes on development of the technology. That's all putting pressure on our stocks in the region today. You're seeing Korea leading those declines, the concerns that this could prompt, in a way, a slowdown or decline in eye spending. Korea's cost be down 3.7% at one point.
That being said, some analysts have also highlighted that maybe this eye hardware weakness will be short lived because demand still outstrips supply. When you think about chips are computing needs. And also the idea that actually I slow down in development might be good for some of the companies in the industry because it gives them more time to extract the returns from the infrastructure that they are currently building out now, said the board.
I wanted to take you through some of the movers in the session today. It's the memory names SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics. Those are the ones, as you alluded to, top of the show that are getting hot hit. But not just that. Think about how this is compounding. I think some of the fears from Friday when Deep Six new model caused concern about the efficient use of memory, how much demand is actually needed. SoftBank, another stock that is in focus.
It is down by the most in nearly three months. And of course this is a big backer of OpenAI one of the biggest. And the worries now are that, you know, when it comes to OpenAI's value, it might not be as much as previously expected. Of course, Sam Altman talking about the IPO not being this year is not helping the situation. Quick segue as well. When it comes to dollar yen. We are still back above the 154 handle. It is fed and BOJ weak as you highlight.
It's interesting because now markets are pricing in the fed. Tightening by the end of the year was still outpace the BOJ. So there's a high bar for the yen to rally. And that's where you're seeing dollar yen for the moment Stephen okay Bloomberg's April Hong in Singapore thank you very much. Now, some of the biggest names in AI are now calling for a slower pace of development. Anthropic CEO Darry Amata warning that safeguards are failing to keep pace, with increasingly powerful models pledging to implement new safety steps, including third party evaluators amid a suggestion of a slowdown was backed publicly.
Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who said the ChatGPT maker will not go public this year as it focuses on addressing safety concerns. Let's bring in Bloomberg's Anthony Stevens with more on this story. Anthony, good to talk to you. How realistic is a slowdown in AI development and what could it look like for the sector? Yeah. So let's take a look at that 3800 word kind of manifesto on the slow down by step by step.
So the first step of a third party evaluator that seems to be quite feasible. We have a lot of AI companies saying that it's reasonable to do. You just need to find out who those third party evaluators would be and what would be the kind of, uh, the rigor around which, uh, companies adhere to those regulations. The second, uh, kind of, uh, goal that is a bit harder to coordinate. All these air companies at the frontier, too, is sticking to the same metrics.
Now, that is a much deeper discussion and also kind of impinges on an antitrust conversation. And it was very interesting to see President Trump come out very early in the piece and talk about the fact that these, uh, these risks may be overstated and that he wants to stay ahead of China. So that interplay between the government and these companies is going to be very interesting to get the second piece done. Now, the third piece is even more ambitious, which is to get involved, uh, China and other quote unquote, authoritarian countries to play ball along the same rules.
Now, China would obviously have its own I kind of, uh, regulation at times and has been very heavy handed thus far in the domestic market around regulating AI. So I am not sure how much they would want to compare with the US and have a common approach. So there's a lot of moving parts across those three paradigms, and there is not a lot of detail. So we will continue to hear more detail. The situation is very fast moving, both politically and practically.
Over the last couple of days, we've seen a lot more, uh, from the likes of, uh, anthropic, OpenAI, uh, Google, and now Microsoft in terms of putting out their thoughts on what should be the common process. So for now, markets are selling off first and they will ask questions later. Of course, the other question that markets are asking too is what all of this means for the planned IPOs in the sector as well. Sam Altman pointing to safety fears as a reason not to list.
But it looks like anthropic is moving forward. And we understand it's chosen the Nasdaq to list as soon as next month. What sort of impact could this slowdown conversation have on that event? And that sets up a bit of a interesting push and pull between some of these strong revenue numbers that OpenAI and anthropic have been reporting. And recently we have had the fed also talking about the second quarter of adjusted net pos
