This is the Bloomberg Daybreer podcast. Good morning. It's Wednesday the 9th of September. I'm Caroline Hepka here in London

and I'm Steven Carol in Brussels. Coming up today, the US Treasury Secretary Scott Besson tests how far he can bend markets to his will. American forces destroy five Iranian oil tankers as crude prices edge ever closer to $100 a barrel.

Plus, looking for sweet relief, cheap imports and policy delays are squeezing South Africa's century old sugar industry.

Let's start with a roundup of our top stories.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant is stepping up efforts to exert influence across global markets. Speaking at an event in Texas, he challenged traders to test his resolve on boosting the yen, saying he has insight into what the Bank of Japan will do. Bessant dared markets to bet against him.

Whenever people say, "Oh, well, Treasury Secretary is taking a risk." Well, it's my dream. I have asymmetric information.

I am the house. Now, when we intervene with the Japanese yen, I have pretty good insight into what the Japanese what the Bank of Japan's going to do, what Japanese policy makers are going to do. Um, and you can bet against me if you want.

The challenge comes ahead of another test of Besson's market strategy with the US Treasury due to announce the size of expanded bond buybacks today. At a separate event in Washington, the Treasury Secretary said the program is aimed at cooling a fever in the bond market and pushing prices towards equilibrium. He has fueled expectations the buyback will exceed $4 billion, raising the risk that any disappointment could add to selling pressure.

US forces have destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after two attempted missile attacks on an American warship. The American military says the US vessel was not hit and that there were no casualties. Iran responded by firing missiles at Jordan and warning tanker crews near Kuwait and Bahrain peers to abandon their vessels. The renewed fighting has pushed Brent closer to $100 a barrel with the global benchmark trading above $99 now.

Mark Cranfield is Bloomberg's markets live strategist.

It was not on people's template to have oil back at $100. I think people have got used to the idea we were going to settle somewhere between 80 and 90. We got used to that kind of range. But the escalation of conflicts again between the US and Iran is something that was people were hoping has already done that it was in the background. It's not. It's come right back front and center.

Mark Cranfield says that the latest escalation is now fueling fears of deeper disruption through the street of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy supplies. Israel is closing the British consulate in East Jerusalem in response to new UK sanctions against its West Bank settlements. The move comes after the UK announced a ban on imports from Israeli settlements and sanctions on some companies and individuals providing services to them.

France, Canada, and seven other countries are joining the coordinated action aimed at increasing pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Axios reports that the Trump administration did not oppose the UK-led initiative to impose the sanctions. Speaking in the House of Commons, British Foreign Secretary Ed Milliband had this to say.

The British government agrees that there is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in areas of the West Bank perpetrated by settler terrorists. And all too often, the Israeli government has turned a blind eye to this. Israel denies Miliban's accusations of ethnic cleansing and says it will respond similarly to other countries taking actions against it. Writing on social media, the UK's chief rabbi, Aframe Mervvis, called it a truly dark day for British Jews.

He said the sanctions were gesture politics that would embolden people who use hatred as a weapon against Jews. The US has escalated its trade war with Canada following Ottawa's tariff retaliation. President Trump's administration has moved to block import of some products while imposing new levies on others and seeking to ban Canadian companies from selling to government contractors. Speaking in a pre-recorded video after Canada hiked import taxes, imposed tariffs on American products.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the action was needed.

I don't believe in escalating the conflict. That's not constructive. But our tariffs are necessary to protect our workers, protect our companies and our communities. We can't let American goods into Canada tariff-free while they charge our companies to export them.

Canada's Mark Carney there speaking in a video released yesterday. A senior US administration official told reporters that the new measures will take effect in 3 weeks time. US trade representative Jameson Greer called the latest US action a quote natural consequence of Canada's continued discriminatory treatment of crucial American exports. Dominic Leblanc, the minister responsible for Canada's trade with the US said he is in contact with Greer and that Ottawa is assessing Washington's latest moves.

Well, Canada's worsening trade relationship with the US is also accelerating its push for closer ties with the European Union. Bloomberg understands the two sides are working on a sweeping partnership covering trade, security, and critical raw materials. Canada is said to be exploring everything short of EU membership, including deeper cooperation on defense, space, and scientific research. European Commission President Ursa Vanderline is expected to unveil the plans next week with Canada's Mark Carney attending her State of the Union speech.

Now, a string of shocks from El Nino to summer droughts and war in the Middle East are set to push UK food inflation up next year. Blueberg's Euan Pots has the details.

The Food and Drink Federation is warning that food inflation in the UK will hit almost 4% by Christmas, more than double the current rate before accelerating to a peak of close to 6 12% next summer. That would be the highest annual increase since early 2024 when grocery costs were still being affected by the energy shock from the Ukraine war. The UK body for food and drink manufacturers says that if its forecast is correct, a 100 weekly shop in 2020 is set to cost almost £150 by next summer in London.

I'm Yan Pots, Bloomberg Radio. Apple will unveil its first foldable iPhone today with the price potentially topping $2,000. It's the biggest design change in the devices nearly 20 year history and follows years of development. Our chief Apple correspondent Mark German explains why the company believes now is the moment to bring the foldable phone to market. This design, this aha moment intersected with the core technologies coming to a place where Apple thought it actually could bring a product to market.

Uh and then they set their sights on 2026 and and here we are. This will be debuted tomorrow, not by Tim Cook, uh, but by his successor, John Turnis. And the transition date of September 1, that was intentionally chosen so Turnis could be the one to introduce this device and sort of put his face and his stamp on it.

That's Bloomberg's Mark Gur. The foldable phone is expected to open to a roughly 7.8 in display with some large storage configurations potentially costing close to $3,000. And those are our top stories for you this morning. Yeah, we don't know exactly how much that Apple phone might cost in the UK yet. Uh let's see. Let's look at the markets though today. Brank crude is hovering now just below $100 a barrel. So we're keeping an eye on that. $98.95, up 1%.

European natural gas trading at the equivalent of $150 a barrel. European debt has been under more pressure. 2-year German yields hovering around 3% this morning. Uh Treasury yields for 10-year US treasuries 479. So no change there. South Korean stocks have been climbing this morning. So at the moment the Cosby is u
