Canada Tries to Find Alternative Trading Allies as Trade War With US Escalates
Canada imposed sweeping new levies on hundreds of American products, with rates on some as high as 50%. After weeks of negotiations failed to produce an agreement. The development sending Canada looking elsewhere for its international partnerships, entering talks with the European Union for a new agreement that would deepen ties on trade, security, defence and critical supply chains. For more, we're joined by Bloomberg's Thomas Seel from Vancouver.
So Thomas, let's pick up there. We know that Canada has been looking for other export markets, whether that be the EU, whether that be China, whether that be India. What has been Mark Carney's approach to bolstering Canada's economy against what has been these heightened tensions with the Trump administration? Yeah, absolutely. Carney's got an unenviable task of trying to. He's been trying to tread gently while building out these relationships across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Now, obviously, treading gently is not working anymore. Everything's blown up. The talks have collapsed. And so overnight, Canada imposed these tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods. But as you mentioned, he's stepping up talks with the European Union. Canada is already the first country to access this new European mechanism for defence procurement. It can pull in with some EU members. Carney has been striking talks with with China and India, but still incredibly reliant on the US more than any other country.
Our reporting also indicates that here in the US, some of President Trump's more protectionist policies in regard to Canada have resonated relatively. We know that the steel and aluminum industry, domestically at least, wasn't unhappy about these trade talks going off the rails. Can you give me some insight into what the reaction has been in Canada, both from the consumer level, but also some of those specific industries that are being hit now with tariffs and are now being protected in turn by Canada's retaliation?
Yeah. I mean, the US is far and away the most important export market for many of these industries. So steel, aluminum, lumber, autos. I think that's true across all of them. Uh, so it's different, uh, the effect depending on the industry. So, uh, steel, it's maybe a bit more possible for American firms to buy American aluminum. Canada has a much more, uh, kind of muscular role there. And those tariffs have, it seems, been passed on to U.S. buyers.
The prices of aluminum in the US have really gone up by a little bit more than the 50% tariffs that Donald Trump has imposed. Uh, lumber. Uh, Canada is really a captive exporter there. And so that's really, uh, having a profound impact and closing a lot of sawmills up here. But it's also not really great for the industry overall.
