Qualcomm Soars, Boston Scientific Falls, Constellation Brands Declines | Stock Movers
[music] Bloomberg Audio Studios podcasts, radio, news,
the Stock Movers Report, your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market, harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
I'm Carol Master along with [music] Tim Stick. Let's get to it with Bloomberg News US equities reporter Matthew Griffin back here in studio. We're talking Qualcomm.
Yes. Well, Carol, Qualcomm, that's ticker Q QCOM, they're up about 3% now after they signed Amazon up as a customer for their effort to expand into data center gear. So, there are several elements of that deal, but the notable ones, they're going to develop custom AI semiconductors for Amazon Web Services, and in return, Amazon gets the right to buy up to $4 billion of Qualcomm stock. So this company has been trying to expand out of the smartphone market which is troubled right now.
You mean stock meaning chips or you mean stock meaning stock?
Uh no stock. Amazon can buy Qualcomm stock in addition to these chips. So that you know it draws comparisons to some of these sort of circular financing deals but actually is a pretty common playbook for Amazon. They've done this with you know their suppliers logistics business as well. Also, this is a real vote of confidence for that effort by Qualcomm to expand into some higher growth areas.
Kind of putting your money where your mouth is, right, in terms of your supply chain and really supporting them. It's pretty wild. Stock was up at its highs a a lot um more significant, almost 9% at its highs today, but still with a 2.9% gain. Where shall we go now?
Can Do you have a good segue here?
I don't have a good segue. Um Matthew has a good segue for us, though.
Well, what do you got [clears throat] next? We can keep talking technology, maybe the dark side of technology with Boston Scientific, which talked about the impact of a cyber attack. So that's ticker BSX down 5.7% today. We knew there was going to be some impact from this incident that they disclosed last month. Now they say they don't expect to meet their net sales or adjusted earnings guidance for the third quarter or for the full year.
As a result, this disrupted their manufacturing of medical devices, disrupted shipments to customers. So, just the latest headwind for this company. That stock now down 53% this year. And far from the first hack to hit a medical devices company. I mean, just today, Striker was talking about some manufacturing issues due to a cyber attack. That stock also
that's a separate cyber attack.
Separate incident.
And yeah, Boston Scient or Striker rather down 8.4% right now. So, we've just got a spree of them. Yeah.
They don't know who did it, right? They
No, still under investigation. They say they believe there's no further intrusion in their systems, but they just have to keep rebooting everything, getting all of those systems, especially the shipment and delivery ones running again.
Welcome to 26, everybody.
Okay, maybe we all need a drink.
Uh, nice. Well done. There's your segue. Well, the problem for Constellation Brands, that's ticker STZ, is not enough consumers are drinking. They were talking at the Barclays Consumer Conference today. They said the sales for the World Cup. They were great in bars, not so great for take-home. This is the company that distributes Corona and Medello beer in the US. And they said the whole month of August was pretty lackluster.
Was the language there? Consumers are they're paying more money parties and like is that what they expected and I guess didn't happen? Well, the the money that would go to those house parties is going to higher gas prices, higher diesel prices. There's just a lot of pressure on consumers. It's been the case for alcohol for a while now, but the war in Iran, it's piling on more pressure.
On Friday, Carol, uh Molly Smith and I spoke to Maggie Ty. She's the US CEO of Heineken. She came on at the top of our program from the US Open. Hinekin, a major sponsor of the US Open, been doing this for more than 30 years.
All Maggie wanted to talk about was non-alcoholic beer. She brought non-alcoholic beer. The exclusive like the conversation was like exclusively about Heineken Na Heineken 00 as they call it. They're doing a big partnership with Serena.
So,
so people at the open, a lot of it was non-alcoholic. Who was it?
Well, listen, there were plenty of people drinking alcohol at the [laughter] US Open. I can tell you that. Uh, but as far as Heineken was concerned, their focus, they want to talk about um broadening out the non-alcoholic market.
There was something too. I thought I saw a story on the Bloomberg today. I was just looking for it about champagne drinkers too and I think France champagne output to have Oh, this is about because of um sorry about waves and drought.
Sorry. I have to say the alcohol world between climate change people not drinking.
Are you doing your fair share?
Um I did a little bit of drinking while I was on vacation.
Okay. I just want to make sure like a nice bottle of wine
supporting the nice bottle of wine. Some rum punch.
Good.
Lot of water though. We went through water like crazy. No one's drinking uh alcoholic beverages. It's all non-alcoholic. And the people who are drinking alcoholic beverages, we had that story last week. No one's drinking fizzy beverages. So maybe they're drinking water. Maybe they're drinking a twisted tea or whatever it might be.
It's either water or a good red for me. That's what [music] I'm going to say.
