One of those states in the crosshairs is likely to be Michigan where we find congresswoman Haley Stevens. Her district is right outside of Detroit. And, of course, she narrowly lost that Democratic primary for a very competitive senate seat, but we are glad to see you here this morning. We hope you've had your traditional Diet Coke. And I just wanna ask you, you know, your district has a lot of manufacturing. It has a lot of small businesses that do a lot of cross border things.

What are constituents telling you, and and how concerned are they that this is gonna continue to escalate? You know, look. Our manufacturing sector here in Michigan, of which I am, a very close ally and partner with, has really been put through the wringer. You know, I'm a member of congress who's been serving four terms, And I will tell you, I have visited hundreds of small to midsize manufacturers. It is a part of my program, and they are exhausted.

They are really exhausted. And when you go through those indicators and and what the Trump administration is preparing to do with the the, oh my gosh, this the aluminum, the this, the that, Those are American companies, some of them over there. You know? And I don't know where they're you know, how they're making their way through. I mean, some of them are have American workers in them too. I mean, I think about Magna even.

That's not an aluminum company, but it's a key auto supplier. That's a Canadian company that also has huge enterprises in Metro Detroit. I love those guys. I've spent a ton of time with them, and we're just it's exhausting. And and I'm gonna tell you, we've been paying the price in our pocketbooks with job uncertainty and with pullback on investment, billions of dollars of investment lost in Michigan. And yet vice president Vance, he comes to Michigan, France is around.

He's he doesn't know anything about manufacturing. I do, and I can tell you these guys aren't right. Speaking of manufacturing, one of the very, very important industries in your state is the auto industry, of course. To what extent is that going to be affected by these tariffs, and and to what extent do you think that creates political risk for the Republicans? Well, look at the Wall Street Journal even saying that Ford Motor Company is being totally put on the line.

You know, I was deeply proud to stand behind president Biden when we passed in a bipartisan way the CHIPS and Science Act. Yes. It was the effective use of taxpayer dollars. It was your taxpayer money that got a huge return on it. And now all we get from industrial policy from these guys is these erratic tariffs. We don't know what we're gonna wake up to. We didn't know what we were gonna wake up to for the first hundred days of this guy's administration.

I mean, it was, you know, president Trump that is. And so I am worried about automotive. Magna is an automotive supplier, company. Bosch is as well. You know, I do a ton of work in the congress with aluminum that is, a an incredible sector of our supply chain. And yet, you know, here I'm gonna tell you, Windsor goes south to Detroit. I mean, you're going down the Detroit River. You know, the people take their boats out.

They look across. I mean, this is our way of life, and so it's very, very head scratching. And look. As someone who's got incredible legislation, and a program to lessen our dependence on China for critical minerals. And you got president Trump here not able to cut a deal with Canada. He just thinks he can bully them. Look. This guy campaigned in Michigan in '24 promising, oh, I'm gonna take on China. You know, I'm you know you know, I I'm gonna, you know, level the playing field with China.

No. He's licked their bootstraps. They hold our country's debt. Our GDP is down as compared to the rate our debt is increasing. And this is just I was gonna say a bad word, but this is bleep backwards. Right? This is backwards. And and no one in Michigan was told by president Trump when he was campaigning that he was gonna start a trade war with Canada and lick the bootstraps of China. But that's what he's doing, and everyone running for office who calls himself a republican who's out there, you know, distracting on these other, you know, slogans and wins in the day, they own this.

They own this backwards trade agenda, and I'm sick and tired of it. So what happens if this doesn't get resolved before the New Year? I mean, the president has threatened to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian made motor vehicles starting January 1, but there's this example from Politico. I mean, I know this is familiar to you, but when you look at the Ford f series super duty trucks, right, big product for Detroit, a really popular, very expensive, high profit vehicle.

The engine is made in Oakville, Ontario. The transmission comes from Ohio. The axles come from Michigan. There are a lot of trucks and vehicles that are manufactured like this. We're talking right now about the smaller and medium businesses. But for Detroit, which has had a good run the last couple years, could this compromise their recovery? Look. I'm sitting here in Oakland County, Michigan. It's a beautiful Sunday, Labor Day weekend.

I'm gonna tell you just a little bit north of here. We've got the second busiest airport in Michigan. This is the Oakland County Airport. It doesn't have any of these consumer airlines coming in and out of it. You know why it's the second busiest? Freight. Automotive parts, the little widgets, the screws, the smaller parts that you can put on these planes that are going back and forth. Michigan, Canada. Michigan, Canada.

I mean, I'll tell you when I worked on the auto rescue, I worked with the tool and die folks. I mean, half of them were in Canada. I was on the horn with these guys around the darn clock. So, yes, these facts and figures that you were pointing out, it's out of touch. Our automakers look. I I don't I I'm not an employee of them. I'm a representative who cares deeply about good industrial policy. I know they don't wanna get in always to the political fray, but this is darn tooting concerning.

It really is. I mean, people are getting screwed. I'm just gonna tell you. They are. And in fact, these tariffs, you know, where's the revenues back to the consumer? Because they're not coming back to us. You know, some of these small businesses were able to apply, maybe get some back pay or a revenue check from the tariffs. Well, the taxpayer whose bills you know, if it's electricity or health care or food, that only goes up for these consumers, for these hardworking Michiganders.

You know, the middle class is getting choked out. They're sick and tired of it. And you know what? I I love the work I do. I was proud to compete for the senate. We you know, that one's over for me. But I will tell you, I'm gonna own these guys in Trump world every day for this backwards trade and tariff approach that is screwing people and our small businesses. So we've got a big, election coming up for the midterms, obviously, and you did not prevail in your, race with mister El-Eid.

I know you've been asked whether you'll campaign with him. I wanna ask you that. And I wanna also ask you about something that really had an impact in that race, which was the issue of Israel and also APAC funding. Do you think it's a disadvantage now to take money from APAC? Do you wish you hadn't? And just tell us your your plans for helping him out or not helping him out ahead of the the midterms. Well, I'll tell you this.

I am deeply proud to be a pro Israel Zionist two state solution advocate as a democrat. Right? I am very proud to have worked alongside some of the incredible people. There's APAC is full of 6,000,000 individuals. I will tell you I have long standing bonds with members of that organization. A lot of them are, frankly, Jewish moms, you know, who I've gotten to from, you know, all over the country and certainly here in Michigan, and a lot of just hardworki
