NBA Suspends Clippers Owner Ballmer After Leonard Salary Probe

News crossing the Bloomberg terminal. We're learning that the NBA has suspended Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. Of course, Steve Ballmer, the former CEO of Microsoft who bought the Clippers, has now been suspended for one year for violating salary cap rules. Bloomberg's Randall Williams joins us right now to talk a little bit more about this. And this all seems to link back to an investigation involving one of their players Kawhi Leonard.

What happened. Yeah. So the NBA began an investigation into salary cap circumvention by the Los Angeles Clippers to pay Kawhi Leonard. Basically endorsement deals that were not disclosed. And so the reason that this is a big violation is the salary cap, of course, is meant to cap, uh, player pay. Otherwise, billionaires could pay players whatever they want. And essentially that's sort of what was going on in the NBA.

Had been investigating this for almost, I want to say almost a year now. And they found, uh, that, that they were essentially guilty. So they're guilty. And so the punishment right now is Ballmer is removed for one year. Uh, Kawhi Leonard himself was fined, uh, $700,000. Uh, the Clippers were stripped of five first round draft picks and fined $30 million. What does that do to the Clippers as a team? I mean, five first round draft pick.

It's five years up until 2033, but it essentially cuts their team in half probably for the next ten years. You think about that's somebody being suspended that they can't draft in ninth grade right now. So in terms of their future they're trading Kawhi Leonard away. But the punishment is easily the harshest punishment that we have seen since the NBA removed an owner which was Donald Sterling in the Clippers years ago.

And of course, we had Robert Sarver years ago who sold the team, uh, for for different allegations. I think that salary cap circumvention is not grounds to remove an owner. And this punishment of $30 million of five first round draft picks being forfeited is huge.
