Is the US Heading Toward Fiscal Dominance? | Presented by CME Group
[music] Fiscal dominance occurs when persistent deficits and heavy public debt pressure the central bank to [music] holding rates below the level needed to control inflation or to purchase more government debt because tighter [music] policy could sharply increase debt service cost and potentially disrupt markets. The US may not be in that regime [music] today, but preconditions are visible and the constraints tighten as the public debt rises further.
Debt held by the public is around [music] 32.3 trillion or roughly 100% of GDP as of mid2026. Gross debt recently crossed [music] the $40 trillion mark. A 1 percentage point rise in the average [music] interest rate on the debt eventually adds about 1% of GDP to annual interest cost [music] when debt is at 100% of GDP. The current average maturity of marketable debt is around 6 years [music] with about 30% of that debt scheduled to roll over in the next 18 months.
Due to the rolling [music] nature, rate changes can feed through reasonably quickly. The Fed's 2022 2023 hiking cycle already demonstrated this sensitivity without [music] triggering dominance. There is no single threshold for fiscal dominance. However, there are indications of stress both here in [music] the US and other parts of the world. [music]
