美国财长贝森特称中国是唯一反对G20联合声明的国家
Bessent Says China Stopped Unanimous G20 Communique
G20联合声明因中美分歧受阻是重大地缘政治事实,直接影响市场对中美贸易关系及9月高层会晤的预期,建议关注后续政策走向。
It is clear that the country with the world's largest and unsustainable current account surplus of the People's Republic of China was the dissenter. And, you know, I think that we have, uh, nine, 19 other voices. And as I said, uh, my chairman's statement will echo that. The US Treasury secretary there, Scott Best, in pointing the finger at the finger at Beijing as the sole dissenter and a joint communique over at the G20, the US also struggling to gain traction with partners to further isolate Iran economically, to help us sort of bring all of these stories together.
We are joined now by Bloomberg's Patrick Sykes and Jill Desus over in Hong Kong. Jill, let's start with you. Let's start with this G20 or should we call it the G20 minus one? What do we know about what held up this communique in China is the only dissenter and we should say Russia, not a dissenter. Yes. Good morning Oliver. So, you know, you heard a bit from Scott back to himself there. He's really targeting that idea of trade imbalances, um, as being a key issue.
Uh, that was that was really at the heart of this dissent. Um, you know, I'll point out that China had a trade surplus record, trade surplus last year of $1.2 trillion. Again, record largest ever. We've seen, uh, Batman talk about this multiple times throughout the course of this summit. We did get a statement from the China side. Um, that was a bit more vague. Uh, they didn't actually address any of the criticisms that Bess had mentioned directly, but did talk about the need to have an objective view of global imbalances.
Um, and then we also saw a bit of in the chair statement that person was just talking out there, and you're seeing a bit of that on your screen as well. Um, is, uh, some additional points of dissension from China over the status of the free flow of trade throughout the Strait of Hormuz. And so you are sort of seeing this complexity of, um, you know, one, uh, these issues of global trade imbalances that have kind of been a piece of tension between the US and China over the past several years now and then also a bit on the Iran front there.
Well, set the table then for the meeting. I think that everybody has been anticipating for a number of months now. That is the meeting between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump that we're expecting in September. You know, we sort of get to these moments where it seems like there can be some consensus. Things are going kind of well between these two. And then you have sort of events like these set the table for us. Yes. Well, you know, you did obviously have this points of disagreement at this G-20 summit, but I'm not sure that that actually derails in any meaningful capacity.
This meeting that we're still expecting between XI Jinping and Donald Trump in Washington toward the end of the month. There was some mention of the sort of roadmap for this meeting during the G-20 summit, you heard a bit from Besson about some limited talks on AI, for example, although his Chinese counterpart, Haley Fung, I was not present here. So again, he described those as limited. But it does seem like both of these countries, the U.S. and China, are still paving the way for that eventual meeting between Donald Trump and XI Jinping.
Um, you know, again, still a lot of points of disagreement between the world's two largest economies. We'll have to see, um, you know, what else is really in store for us over the next couple of weeks?
