Trump Says Pharma Companies Commit To Lowering Prices | Balance of Power 08/31/2026
This is balance of power. Live from Washington, D.C.. I think people are very smart. They know we had to go into Iran. I had to do it. If I didn't do it, they'd be taking shots at our cities. They would have wiped out Israel. They would have wiped out the Middle East because that's their inclination. Tonight, back and forth, a weekend flare up of U.S. Iran strikes a sending oil higher, dimming hopes for a near-term reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The renewed pressure comes as global finance leaders gather in Asheville for the G-20. With inflation and the economic fallout from the conflict in focus. Plus, what goes up? President Trump says his Venezuela oil deal will bring down prices at the pump. The questions remain over the investment, the funding and how much consumers will actually feel it. We'll discuss with former Energy Secretary Dan Threat And back in town, house lawmakers returned to Washington with a government funding deadline looming and a stopgap bill at the top of the agenda to avert a shutdown.
Republican Congressman Tim Moore of North Carolina joins us shortly with the peep from Capitol Hill, from Bloomberg's Washington, D.C. studios to our TV and radio audiences worldwide. Welcome to Balance of Power. I'm Kailey Leinz alongside Joe Matthew, and we begin this evening at the white House. President Trump taking questions from reporters on Iran, leaving the door open to another round of U.S. strikes. They're a failed nation.
Uh, they've got a 350% inflation. They have no currency. Uh, they're not paying their soldiers. Their leaders are largely dead. Uh, their navy is gone. Their airforce is gone. Their, uh, surveillance equipment is almost entirely gone. Uh, that doesn't mean we won't smack them. We'll see what happens. His comments coming after Washington and Tehran exchanged attacks over the weekend for the first time in about a month, renewing fears of another cycle of escalation.
Joining us now from the white House. Bloomberg government senior white House reporter Mika Solna. Mika, after what you heard from the president. Should we anticipate another round of tit for tat strikes, or is this something bigger, a resumption of military activity? Well, we just heard the president say in the Oval Office that these strikes are planned to be limited, but we are seeing more escalation happen between the U.S. and Iran.
Trump president Trump has warned of an escalation, uh, with the strikes in Iran. So I think that we're seeing that this war is nowhere near, uh, coming to a close as the white House has really struggled to try and end this war. And foster, uh, negotiated a long lasting peace deal. So, uh, we're going to see more continue. But I know that this is a big issue for the president. The president has said that a lot of Iran has been decimated, the leaders have been killed and a lot of the infrastructure has been destroyed.
But it doesn't seem like this is coming to a close yet. And of course, the renewed hostilities have put upward pressure on oil today. But the president says that oil prices may come down at some point due to the deal with Venezuela. How much do we actually know about the finer points of that deal? Mika, and how quickly this oil actually comes to market? Yeah, I think that there's a lot of questions left on this $100 billion deal with Venezuela, uh, including where exactly this private financing is going to come for this, this oil.
We just heard the president say that this is going to be a fix for bringing down gas prices in the United States. He said that this oil is going to be going to places like Houston and Louisiana. But there's been little detail. I think, that the white House will soon be trickling out those details. I know that we'll be keeping a close eye here in terms of what's kind of in that fine print. All right. Bloomberg's Michael Stoner at the white House.
Thank you so much. Now on the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, house lawmakers are returning today after a five week recess facing an urgent vote on a stopgap spending bill to avert a shutdown. But with the midterms fast approaching, they're also facing a slate of political pressure points from a Republican push to condemn socialism to ethics controversies. And now some renewed fighting with Iran, adding another complication on Capitol Hill.
Joining us now from the rotunda is Republican Congressman Tim Moore of North Carolina, a member of the House Budget and Financial Services committees. Congressman, welcome to Bloomberg TV and radio. I believe it is tomorrow afternoon that you and your colleagues are scheduled to vote on the continuing resolution. Are the votes there for it to pass? I'm informed that the votes are there to pass the continuing resolution.
And this is important because this would avoid a government shutdown during a critical time in a week. We pass full budgets for this current fiscal year. Of course, it ends at the end of September. So it's important that we continue all next year, particularly with some of the things that you were covering earlier, some of the conflict abroad and so forth. We don't need a government shutdown. And so this continuing resolution would actually keep the government open all the way through December 12th.
And that gets us past the elections, everything else, so that we can keep things moving and also keep working on other legislation between now and then. You know it's Congressman, great to have you back. We're talking about of course, just getting across the line and beyond the elections and into December here. Uh, some suggestions are the only way that we can get anything done at this point. So much for regular order.
But, you know, we're focused a lot on Bloomberg these days, uh, on the $40 trillion national debt and the bond market, as I'm sure you well know, has had a few spasms over this are continued cause at the risk of sounding redundant. The reason why we got here. Well, I'll say Washington has spends too much. And if you look at what we've dealt with in terms of the the four years under the Biden administration where you had record runaway spending, you had, you know, everything that happened after Covid.
You had the national debt which grew out of control. And right now, as you to your point, 40 trillion. And then think about the fact that we're paying about $1 trillion every year just for the interest. I mean, this is so upside down. It's it's indefensible that we that as a country that we've allowed it to get this way. You couldn't run a business this way. You couldn't run your household this way. And so that's why I support a lot of the measures to really rein in spending, to make sure that we're doing the right things, because we shouldn't be just throwing away this money, and we're leveraging our kids and our grandkids futures.
So mean. So we've dealt with some of that this year. We we've controlled some spending. There was a reduction in spending that happened, but it wasn't enough frankly. And uh, and we're going to have to make some tough choices. Well, you know, I know you're checking the Biden administration on this. But isn't the run rate higher under the Trump administration? And and we're about to continue a supplemental budget request that appears to be deficit spending.
Correct. Well, the rate of growth was much more during the four years of Biden. I mean, it's where you had the, uh, you know, the curve was like this growing. Now the curve is about like this. It's still up, uh, which I wish it wasn't, but but our number one also meaning the tax cuts without. Yeah. So fair enough. I we don't need to have this, uh, argument right now because everyone seems to have finger prints on it as a member of the budget committee.
When do we get back to regular order? Uh, we should. Honestly, we should operate in regular order all of the time. Uh, but we're dealing with some realities right now in an election year where we really cannot count on many Democrats to v
