On this edition of Next Africa, Dangote teaches next generation of leadership. Aliko Dangote to his three daughters have assumed bigger roles across the family businesses. In a rare joint interview, they speak about their plans to help shape the company's future and the pressure to prove they've earned their place. We also hear how they are approaching leadership, succession and building on their father's legacy. Plus, could a blockbuster IPO for Dangote Refinery business open the floodgates for Nigeria's capital markets?

We ask investors what the listing could unlock for the country. and the region Welcome to next Africa. I'm Jennifer Zambesi in Johannesburg. Africa's next chapter is being shaped by ambition. Industry and a new generation of leadership. The Dangote Group is at the heart of this transformation, and the influential family owned conglomerate is also in the midst of its own change. With the daughters of Aliko Dangote taking a prominent roles at the helm.

In their first joint television interview. Halima Maria and Fatima Dangote welcomed US into their family home in Nigeria speaking together about their expanded responsibilities across the family's business empire. With their focus firmly on what comes next and the ambition to build African businesses that can compete on the global stage. The Dangote Group has grown into one of Africa's largest and most diversified industrial businesses.

Started by Aliko Dangote in the 1970s as a small trading enterprise. The conglomerate now spans cement, sugar, fertilizers, petroleum refining, and a family office. Now the next generation is stepping in. Dangote daughters Maria, Halima and Fatima have taken executive roles across the business and are looking to build on their fathers foundation. We look to the core sectors, but we also diversify, so we make what we have gold and we explore other things that may potentially be diamond or what's interesting.

We have done it. We have done refinery, which we never had. We have done fertilizer. We went into power? Everything Industrialization We're going to invest in. Cement remains the bedrock of the business. Dangote eldest daughter Mariya, joined the board last year following a varied career across the conglomerate. Currently, our production is around 55 million metric ton per annum, but the target is to reach 80 million metric ton per annum by 2030 So now my strategy is to see how we can bring our customers closer to see how we can serve them well in Nigeria.

We are the biggest. So to check what the competitors are doing, we think we are far ahead of them because we are already, you know, exporting because Nigeria before is importing cement. But now we are exporting. But the Dangote Group's ambitions go beyond its existing operations. The family business is seeking new areas of investment while increasing production and value creation in Africa. We are focusing on our core, products and everything that we do, but we are really ready to diversify.

We are diversify and you can see from core cement, sugar, salt, we are doing refined products. fertilizer. If you look at we want to export value that's what we want to do. we don't want to export crude oil. We want to manufacture it and produce refined products. We don't want to export limestone. We want to mix cement. We don't want to. We don't even want to export anything that is not valuable. We have to refine it.

We make it here. Part of that next phase will be the new family office, which the sisters say will support investment, collaboration and social impact. By next year, first quarter of next year, you start to see the presence of family office while looking at the 2030 vision, looking at how we support women, how we support social impact investment, not just the business-wise, we will invest, we will collaborate, we will grow our refineries from we have in Nigeria went into Kenya with doubling our capacity from 615.

Actually, my dad will correct me 750, barrels by day to double that. So we are well on our way to do that. Would you look to partner with others in terms of co investing in any projects or collaboration? We don't mind co investing, but we are very much open to partner in when it comes to investment. But when you consider a legacy is going to be our legacy. Is that because it stays within the family? it stays within the family, stay with it, and it stays within our core values. what really matters. our core values, we know what they are.

We are also Muslims were also Sharia compliant. So is a bit different, you know, different feel. And we want our businesses in five years to still look like we are focusing on that industrialization. but having it to survive the next 8, 10 generations in Africa from the third generation, your life was what? What happened? Right? So, we don't want to be part of what happened. We know what happened and we're going to change it.

But delivering on those ambitions comes with challenges For Fatima Dangote, who oversees commercial operations at the refinery. Entering a new industry has also meant navigating competition. Unfortunately, we're facing a lot of pushback and challenges from people that have been operating within the industry. So, it's not just facing the challenge of selling Selling is the easiest, but facing many other challenges of competition, of dumping.

It's against that backdrop that the Dangote group is preparing for another major step of opening the refinery to investors. Many people are focused on the upcoming IPO. What do you think it symbolizes in the bigger scheme of things? This is not a refinery or just simply a business for the group. It's something that we've built that we feel is an asset for Nigeria, Nigerians as a whole, and Africans. So this is for me a treasure of Africa that every African should be proud of to be part of, not just Dangote as a company, For me, it is beyond the company.

This is a story though. It's trying to tell that Africa can do it. as opposed to the narrations of the past where Africa is relying on other developed economies. So this is to say Africa can do it on its own, and not just at any scale, but at a global scale. And their ambitions may not stop there. The sisters say there are more projects and opportunities on the horizon, likely taking the group into new markets. Could we see another replica of the refinery outside of Kenya?

Is that something you think about? Maybe because with our father new projects kept coming up. We were making fun of him that maybe after 2030 there will be Vision 2040, right? So there's always something that drives him, and I think for me that is what drives all of us to see that we actually attain this Vision 2030 before then. When you see him at his age the zeal, the passion, the hard work that he puts towards the work it makes you want to do a lot more And that keeps us excited and on our toes to make sure that we actually achieve whatever he has put before us and to make sure we even exceed.
