Trump Doubles Down on Mazzei in Oklahoma Governor Runoff After Prediction Markets Missed First Round
The Oklahoma Republican governor runoff is the latest 2026 test of a pattern prediction markets have struggled with: a President Donald Trump-backed favorite can look close to inevitable before the first vote, only to find the actual electorate a lot less settled.
Mike Mazzei was priced near 90% to win the nomination heading into the June primary. He did not.
Attorney General Gentner Drummond finished first by less than a percentage point, 26.3% to 26.0%, forcing the two Republicans into Tuesday’s runoff after neither candidate came close to the 50% threshold.
Now Mazzei is once again the market favorite, trading at 78% on Kalshi with $1.5 million in volume and 78% on Polymarket with $525,000. Traders have poured more than $1 million into the contracts since the initial primary.
The question is whether traders have correctly priced a head-to-head runoff this time or are repeating a mistake from the first round.

The first market miss
The June result was not a minor polling error. Mazzei entered as the candidate traders expected to win comfortably after Trump delivered a surprise late endorsement, calling him a “MAGA Warrior” and giving him his “complete and total endorsement.”
But Drummond, a statewide elected official with deeper Oklahoma roots and a more established political base, finished first by roughly 1,100 votes. Mazzei advanced, but only after a crowded field divided the Republican electorate and prevented either man from approaching a majority.
That result matters because it changes how the 78% market price should be read. The first contract treated Mazzei as a near-lock in a fragmented field. The runoff contract assumes the opposite, that consolidation favors the Trump-endorsed candidate. It might.
But the available polling has been sparse and close, and the first round showed that Drummond starts with a real, statewide coalition.
Trump turns up the pressure
Trump is not treating this like a routine runoff. He has doubled down on Mazzei, attacking Drummond as a “fake Republican” and again urging Oklahoma Republicans to turn out for his endorsed candidate.
That makes Tuesday a clear endorsement-power test. Trump won Oklahoma by more than 30 points in 2024, and a candidate carrying his endorsement should have an obvious advantage in a GOP runoff.
Mazzei also has the backing of outgoing Gov. Kevin Stitt, giving him both the MAGA and establishment support that candidates normally want in a statewide Republican contest.
But Trump’s backing did not get Mazzei over the line in June. It helped him reach the runoff, but it did not make him the first-place finisher. And Drummond has now had two months to frame himself as the independent Oklahoma conservative running against a candidate chosen by Washington and Trump-world.
The Evette comparison
Trump’s endorsements, especially in state-level races, do not guarantee a safe investment nor a win at the polls. The obvious recent comparison is South Carolina.
Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette was also a heavily favored, Trump-backed candidate for governor. She finished first in the initial primary but failed to clear 50%, then lost the runoff to Attorney General Alan Wilson after Trump complicated the race by endorsing both candidates late.
The situations are not identical. Trump has not split his support in Oklahoma. He is all-in behind Mazzei. Drummond is also not running the same campaign Wilson did. But the warning is the same: a large market edge before a first-round primary does not automatically survive a smaller, more motivated runoff electorate.
In fact, Oklahoma may be the cleaner version of the test. Mazzei has the president’s unambiguous backing, while Drummond has to prove that a well-known state official can beat Trump’s candidate in Trump country.
If Mazzei wins, markets can argue the runoff finally gave his endorsement its full value. If Drummond wins, it becomes another reminder that even in a red state, Trump’s support is powerful, not dispositive.
November is not the point
The winner will face Democratic nominee Cyndi Munson, who won her party’s primary with about 75% of the vote. But Oklahoma is not a meaningful general election battleground. The Republican nominee is overwhelmingly likely to hold the governor’s mansion in a safely red state.
That is why Tuesday is not really about November. It is about the Republican Party’s internal hierarchy. It’s Trump loyalty versus a homegrown statewide brand, market confidence versus actual turnout, and whether the June result was a warning or just a temporary detour.
For now, Mazzei is the 78% trade on prediction markets. But after a first-round market price near 90% ended with him in second place, Oklahoma is another case where traders should remember what the numbers actually mean: not certainty, just a bet.
