Recent jobs and inflation data have sharply reduced the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the September 15th 16th FOMC meeting, but persistent price pressures above the 2% target remain unresolved. Weak labor market data and two consecutive cooler inflation prints in June and July have given the majority of the FOMC more room to wait. Inflation has stayed above the 2% target for more than 5 years and earlier core strength along with lingering energy or service pressures continues to give hawkish officials reasons to speak out.
Markets and many economists still see some probability of a hike later in 2026 if inflation does not continue to ease. The September meeting includes updated projections such as the dot plot which will be closely watched. In short, unexpected job losses and slightly softer price data have eased the near-term pressure for our September move, supporting the off the hook framing. Still, with inflation above the target and the dual mandate under strain, the question of whether and when policy may need to be tightened further remains open.
