The Stock Movers Report, your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market, harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.

Well, let's take a look at some stocks on the move today in Asia. I'm Stephen Carroll, and I'm joined by Bloomberg's markets reporter Anthony Stevens. [music] Anthony, good to have you with us. Let's start with Samsung Electronics then. It's share buyback plans playing out across markets.

Yeah, uh it's joining the party of shareholder return that Hynix started, right? Now, they're listening to Korean retail investors who wanted more money back uh coming back to Korea as opposed to going outward in investing. So, that's helped the stock here. You have the stock rallying, but it's interesting to note that most of the gains are concentrated in the pref shares. So, the pref shares uh pricing in that they might get some preferential dividend treatment, which will be a little bit of a difference from Hynix which did share cancellation and buyback.

Now, either way, uh both of these companies together and their kind of shareholder return program back to Korea is really helping the one. It's a standout outperformer here, and it's continuing to rally. Uh it's up 80 basis points.

Yeah, a pretty significant move uh from Samsung there. SK Hynix, meanwhile, supporting the optical sector, but it's less good news if you're making circuit boards, it appears.

So, this was a very interesting one out of the blues. Hynix kind of decided to validate the scientific thesis for the optical space. They basically saying that we're hitting the limits of copper wiring in circuitry in terms of increasing the speed between uh different uh processing units on the circuit board. Then, they want to do it by a optical fiber uh that is um pre-built into the processor, right? Uh and that's a theme that has been running in China and the US for quite some time.

It has a lift listed ETF in the US, a light US. Uh so, it's not like the street was not talking about it, but for for Hynix to come out and talk about it in a in a academic paper was quite something. On the other hand, it's hit the Taiwanese players who make those copper circuit boards that are being kind of technologically disrupted. So, Uni-Micron is down around 5% and you have Nanya's printed circuit board is also down 5%.

Meanwhile, on the China X where the Chinese optical names are listed, they're up around 2 to 3%.

Okay, so that's what we're looking at some of the other spike parts of the technology sector.

You've also been looking at some of the earnings that we had out from some of the big internet and consumer names in China and what lessons we learned about the picture for the Chinese consumer.

What we've learned is that the internet as a as a driver of growth is dying and AI is the biggest game in town, right? We kind of knew that, but the Alibaba result was really jarring in that regard. Despite a slowing down of China's e-commerce price was, they continue to struggle in e-commerce. That's weighing down the result. You know, there's a lot of debate whether their cloud AI business can offset that. So, you saw a huge volatility in the US listed line where the shares opened down and closed up.

And in Hong Kong, we opened up and now we're closing down, right? So, there's a lot of ongoing surprise there. But what we're learning is under the hood, the Chinese consumer just cannot catch a break. We have NetEase also missing on earnings and that's weaker. But there is a cautionary note in this. You can get too bearish, right? For example, one of China's most buzzy retail names, Pop Mart, is one of the most shorted names in Hong Kong.

This is of course the maker of the Labubu doll, which everyone thought was a hype product and is very short this name. They did miss drastically on earnings, but they're putting that money to work buying a instituting a buyback platform and that stock is now up from the lows that it opened at.

See, this is the thing. These trends can't be enduring as well. Um I won't get into

roll with it, you know?

Yeah, you can't get into the la fufu part of it though, which is the whole other fascinating morphology of the economy around [music] us. Uh particular dog
