This is a Bloomberg money minute. The housing market is showing signs of strain. Pending sales of previously owned homes fell 2.3% in July, to the weakest level since January. High borrowing costs and record home prices are keeping buyers on the sidelines. The average 30 year mortgage rate is close to a one year high at 6.67%. Meanwhile, the stubbornly weak housing market is taking a toll on Lowe's. The home improvement retailer cut its financial outlook for the year.

The results stand in contrast to those at Home Depot, which reported stronger than expected earnings yesterday, and target may finally be turning the corner after years of losing ground rivals. The big box retailer lifted its full year financial outlook. The company expects sales to increase about 5% this year.
