Vital, the world's largest oil trading house, has turned the Hormuz crisis to its advantage in a little watched corner of the global commodities market. That's the story covered in detail on the terminal today and our big take. Bloomberg's Jack Farsi joins us now with more on this Jack. How did retail benefit from the Hormuz closure? Uh, thanks so much for having me. Um, yeah. This is a story, really, about how, uh, since, uh, the war in Iran, we got it going.

Iran began, um, vital, uh, the world's largest commodity trading house has, uh, become extremely dominant in, uh, east and southern Africa. So, for example, we've got shipping data, uh, that show in the month of July alone, the veto, uh, accounted for over 40% of, um, of diesel shipments, uh, to the region. Um, and, and across the region in a number of different countries, uh, the countries have signed, uh, exclusive deals, uh, largely outside of normal, uh, tendering process is, uh, to be supplied over a period of in, in most cases several months.

Uh, by by Supplies from Vito. And, Jack, what have these deals meant for countries like Tanzania and Namibia? That's why we've spoken to government officials in all the countries we've named. And. And almost all of them say, you know, the the we were facing, uh, a massive energy crisis. We were worried about, uh, the possibly the possibility of fuel shortages and the deals that they've done, either directly or indirectly, uh, with veto have, um, prevented fuel shortages, have meant that their countries have continued to be supplied.

Uh, on the other hand, our analysis shows that in many cases, these deals are extremely expensive. Uh, and in some instances, uh, the contracts have been amended in ways that ended up, uh, benefiting veto. Um, uh, I would say I've spent quite a lot of time looking at this story. Uh, I would say it's it's really hard to say definitively the price of this deal is wrong. And obviously these deals were agreed at the time, uh, at a time of, uh, great disruption in the markets.

But that's exactly the reason why organizations like the IMF push for countries to do transparent and competitive tenders so that you can see all the different offers, um, from all the different competing suppliers. And in almost all the cases that we've written about in this story, these deals were done outside of ordinary, uh, transparent tender processes. And what has been Vettel's response to all of this? Vitalis says that, um, that it's that it's one of these deals, it's, uh, supplying more of Africa because, um, it was able to offer, uh, secure supplies and security of supply at a time when other suppliers want, when supplies in the Middle East, which the region is very reliant on, were disrupted.

Um, and, and so it's been able to, you know, it is the world's largest oil trader oil trading house for sure. It supplies, uh, trade something like 8 million barrels a day of oil and oil products, which is enough to supply the entire continent of Africa and also the UK and France on top. Um, and it says it used its, um, its financial and logistical heft to ensure supplies to Africa at a very difficult time.
