Florida Primaries Are Loaded With Prediction Markets, but Only a Few Races Are Actually Getting Serious Money
Florida heads into Tuesday’s primary election with a crowded prediction market board and a much narrower group of races traders actually care about.
The statewide nominations look largely decided, but the money tells a more interesting story: markets are concentrating around the few contests with national names, MAGA-world stakes, ideological fault lines, or a plausible route to November relevance.
The headline is Rep. Byron Donalds. The President Donald Trump-endorsed congressman is trading at 99% to win the Florida Republican nomination for governor on Kalshi, with $40.4 million in trading volume, and at 99% on Polymarket with $4.5 million. That is by far the biggest primary market in the state, not because the outcome looks uncertain, but because it determines the likely Republican nominee to replace term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Donalds dominates the governor board
Donalds has led the Republican field throughout the campaign, with recent polling averages putting him around 43%, far ahead of Lt. Gov. Jay Collins at 14%, James Fishback at 9%, and former House Speaker Paul Renner at 8%.
The market agrees the winner contract is all but settled.
But the most interesting governor-side market is not the winner contract. It is the second-place market, where Collins is trading at 77% to finish behind Donalds, compared with Fishback at 22%, on about $366,000 in volume. That differs from the main field pricing, where Fishback has occasionally drawn more attention as the loudest anti-establishment alternative.
The distinction is simple: Traders are looking for the remaining uncertainty in a race they expect Donalds to win easily. The second-place contract is where the live question sits: whether Collins’ institutional position or Fishback’s insurgent profile translates into a better primary night finish.
Donalds will likely face former GOP congressman-turned-Democrat David Jolly in November.
Kalshi has Republicans at 81% to win the governorship on $220,257, and polling has generally shown Donalds ahead of Jolly by mid-single digits. Florida is no longer a classic purple-state battleground, and the governor market reflects that.
Senate is settled for the GOP
The Republican Senate primary is even less competitive. Appointed Sen. Ashley Moody, who replaced Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is at 98% on Kalshi, though the contract has drawn just $117,126 in volume.
Four Republicans are running, but Moody’s combination of incumbency, statewide name recognition and party support has made the GOP nomination a non-event for traders.
The Democratic side has more ideological intrigue. Retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman is at 93% to win the Democratic nomination over state Rep. Angie Nixon, who is at 8%, on $111,145 in volume.
Nixon is running from the party’s left, while Vindman has the fundraising and national profile advantage. He reported roughly $16.7 million raised through June, compared with Nixon’s roughly $625,000.
But neither primary is drawing major money because traders appear to see the general election as a relatively safe Republican hold. The Senate general election market has Republicans at 84% on $155,160 in volume, and available polling shows Moody ahead of both potential Democratic opponents: 50% to 42% over Nixon and 50% to 40% over Vindman in one July survey.
The upside for Democrats is that Nixon has polled somewhat better than Vindman against Moody, but that has not changed the broader market read.
The down-ballot socialist test
The most meaningful progressive test is likely in Florida’s newly drawn 25th Congressional District. There, Rep. Jared Moskowitz faces democratic socialist and former union organizer Oliver Larkin. Moskowitz is at 90% to win the Democratic nomination on $820,000 in Kalshi volume.
Traders are more active in that race than the Senate primaries because it is a cleaner ideological bet. Larkin represents the same question that has played out in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin: Can the left’s organizing model and affordability-focused message break through against a well-known Democratic incumbent?
Florida is far less hospitable terrain for democratic socialists than New York or Colorado.
Trump carried the state, and the newly drawn district is more Republican-friendly than Moskowitz’s prior seat. That does not make Larkin irrelevant, but it makes the race a useful test of whether the progressive wave can travel into a state where Democrats are trying to rebuild rather than defend a dominant coalition.
Markets traders skipped
There are plenty of other Florida contracts, but most are low-liquidity and functionally settled.
Incumbent Rep. Randy Fine is at 99% in the Republican primary for the 6th District on $675,000 at Kalshi and 98% on Polymarket with $266,000. That is meaningful volume for a House primary, driven in part by Fine’s national profile and the attention around Florida’s right-wing factional fights.
By contrast, the Republican Senate market, Vindman’s Democratic Senate market, and several other statewide contracts have only around $100,000 in Kalshi volume despite appearing on one of the year’s biggest primary ballots.
The reason is not complicated. Uncertainty and consequence drive trading. A market can list every primary, but traders are more likely to commit money where the outcome is uncertain, the candidate has a national following, or the result creates a new November narrative.
That is why Donalds has $40.4 million behind a 99% price. It is less a vote of uncertainty than a liquid, high-recognition market tied to Trump, DeSantis’ open seat and the future direction of Florida’s GOP.
Florida likely remains red in November
Florida’s primary board is active, but the November market is blunt.
Prediction markets favor Republicans at 84% in the Senate race and 81% in the governor race. Even with high-profile Democratic candidates, a socialist push in select House primaries and some closer statewide polling than markets imply, traders see Florida as a Republican state first.
Tuesday will decide who carries that advantage into the fall. Donalds and Moody are overwhelmingly likely to emerge as the GOP statewide nominees. Vindman is favored for Democrats in the Senate contest, while the Democratic governor nomination is less of a market event than the Republican side.
The real story is not whether Florida flips in the 2026 midterm election. It is whether these primaries reveal a Democratic coalition capable of making the state more competitive in the next cycle.
