Israel Hits Lebanon, US Prepares Fresh Iran Measures
These are the deadliest strikes against the Southern part of Lebanon since that MOU was reached in June, which the expiry date for that, if you were to hold it into account given the latest escalations we've seen in the region mean anything. That deadline is due later today. We don't know what exactly is going to happen once it expires. Meanwhile, of course, the most important thing that we're monitoring right now and the thing of substance is that economic isolation plan that Scott Bessent has touted.
And, again, it's unclear just what exactly that entails or if that will entail further sanctions against Iran. It's already one of the most, if not the most sanctioned country, by The United States. Now Iran sells 90% of its oil to China. So could this perhaps mean sanctioning Beijing, which would in turn lead us to a different story, further tariffs, retaliation by China on The United States, but again, unclarity around what exactly that means.
And, of course, the other deal that it's taking, that is taking place on the peripheral is that between Iran and Oman, it has been in final stages for the good part of two weeks. It remains in the final stages, and it will create some kind of shipping route that is latest we know in the Strait Of Hormuz to get that trickle of oil flowing back into it. We still are seeing attacks in the Strait Of Hormuz. We're still seeing, for example, ADNOC flagged ships in the waterway getting attacked by Iran.
Iran saying through one of its top military chiefs that the waterway is a god given geopolitical asset for the Iranian nation and that leverage will never return to its former state. So Iran continuing to assert dominance there. Are we back to square one is the question? We're not sure, but we're definitely not seeing progress in the wider negotiations or in those negotiations that are taking place to reopen the Strait Of Hormuz.
