Bloomberg Money Minute: US Stocks Fall, Oil Rises, Reddit Gains, PayPal Talks Sale
This is a Bloomberg money minute. On Wall Street all the major averages slightly lower today, down about a fifth of a percentage on signs that the U.S. consumer is slowing down. Retail sales in July falling by the most in over a year. Car sales hit hard, and consumer sentiment for August moved lower on worries about rising inflation. At the close, the Dow was down 108 points. The Nasdaq lost 74. The S&P lower by 13. With the U.S. war against Iran at a stalemate, the Strait of Hormuz still effectively closed by Iran oil nearly 2% higher today.

It ended at $82.40 a barrel. Among the big gainers today, shares of the social media company Reddit, they rose 12.5%. That company preparing to join the S&P 500 index starting next week. And PayPal is right now in talks to sell itself to a group that includes the payments platform stripe and the private equity firm Advent International. That's according to the Wall Street Journal. Now, an earlier bid by both those companies was rejected by PayPal.
