Google is making visible AI watermarks optional across Gemini and Flow while keeping invisible provenance signals intact.
This is only about AI-generated media, not text: Nano Banana images, Omni videos, and Lyria-generated music can have their visible Google watermark turned off.
The visible mark gave viewers an immediate cue, but it also sat directly on media that you wanted to publish or edit.
But the hidden SynthID watermark and C2PA provenance data stay attached, so Google still has a way to identify the media as AI-generated even when people cannot see a watermark.
SynthID embeds an imperceptible signal into generated media and can usually survive resizing, recoloring, compression, and other edits.
