For Oil Markets, the Strait of Hormuz Isn’t Closed Says Blas
It is a lot higher than most people, um, estimates. I think that the consensus probably somewhere between 4 and $5 million a day, based on the available data that we have. And I think that that is very important to say that the emphasis is on available data that reads not a lot of data. Um, a lot of the tankers are crossing the Strait of Hormuz in what we call dark. They have shut, um, they have, uh, turned off their, uh, automatic transponders, which is a gadget that provides times where their position on the water, their um, uh, longitude, latitude, um, speed and heading.
Um, we can use some satellite images to figure out where those oil tankers are. But the problem is, before the war, we have access to multiple companies providing, uh, multiple satellite services over the Strait of Hormuz. Uh, under pressure from the US government, a lot of those companies have stopped providing those pictures because Washington fears that Iran was using those pictures as a source of intelligence for their attacks, for their targeting.
So we are effectively with a couple of satellites, uh, run by the European Union, which provides a single picture every 3 to 5 days. It's not enough to have a good coverage of the region. So a lot of it. A lot of what is happening is going dark, and simply probably we are missing some of it. So can I believe that when the Secretary of Energy of the United States, Chris Rice, says that as much as 9 million barrels a day are crossing, I think it's possible.
I think it would be foolish for us to say, no, he's lying. I don't believe it. Just because they have a label data that we have, uh, doesn't really support what he's saying. And I think that the market is beginning to have a sense that probably more than what we think is leaving the Strait of Hormuz. Who are these guys like? Who are the captains? Who are the companies? Who are the insurance companies? They're saying, all right, give it a shot, guys.
See if you can make it through. Who are. How is that happening? What? A lot of it is being organized by the state owned company. Uh, state oil company of the United Arab Emirates called Adnoc. Uh, is, uh, JM not nearly, uh, as known as, say, Saudi Aramco, but, uh, a big oil company run by the Emirates, uh, using their own tankers using tankers that they are hiring from the market, particularly Greek ship owners. Uh, South Korean ship owner who has become a big owner of super tankers.
And uh, as it comes from the crew, uh, all what I can say is that very bright people, because they are putting their their lives at risk. Uh, very well pay, uh, some of the company for what we are hearing are offering, uh, big bonuses for anyone willing to take the risk. But we have seen some sailors are dying on on attacks by Iran on oil tankers. So it is really, uh, the weight of fear, uh, that that French movie will have a sequel recently, uh, updated, um, very bright people, uh, making the runs and obviously some people making themselves very, very rich.
Uh, Iraq is offering a discount of $30 a barrel for anyone who wants to load or is willing to load his crude inside the Persian Gulf and getting it out. Have you on a full tanker of 2 million barrels of oil? That's $60 million that you could make in ten days.
