The Stock Movers Report, your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market, harnessing the power of Bloomberg data. Well, let's take a look at some stocks on the move today in Asia. I'm Steven Carroll and we're joined now by our equities reporter, Winnie Sue. Winnie, good to talk to you. Let's start then in South Korea and the kind of rivalry if you want between the market's two big players Samsung and SKH Highix.
What's going on today?
Yeah, it's actually very exciting to see how they are really rising back again. Now, um it seems like there is a trend really changing right now of earlier investors really trying to focus on or to time when that peak of the memory cycle is going to be. And there's a bit of a caution there. But now it seems like the focus is shifting towards the potential cash returns of these companies that have really seen surging clash cash flows due to uh the AI demand and the profitability of the business.
So we've learned of course um last week that SKH High is planning to announce this big shareholder return plan and we're hearing Samsung also potentially going to follow this. So expecting these two companies to announce these massive plans as early as later this month. So that is really driving investors um interest in the buybacks in the dividends to come as the next next catalyst for the two companies. And then we also have learned that there is a local media report saying that um Singapore's state fund is planning to invest more in these two companies and it is quite significant because it goes to show how the long-term investors are now also seeing the attractiveness of the South Korean market and this can potentially bring in more stable foreign fund flows for the two companies.
Okay, so that's on those key South Korean stocks. Let's go to Tencent next. We're watching their shares ahead of their earnings.
Yeah, so we are that's actually the flip side of things today because we are seeing uh Tencent shares being the key drag of markets today and uh with uh the upcoming earnings today, it's actually going to kick off the earnings season for the Chinese internet names. we we have seen quite a strong rally in these names in the past five weeks or so. So, you're seeing investors turning a bit more cautious today um ahead of earnings because of um because of how closely they are looking at for some of the signs.
So what they're looking at right now is if the company can really show how they are balancing the um massive pay cape spending versus um what they can actually get out of the potential AI monetization and you can see that in fact um we are for now looking at the um expectation also for them to talk about the their work body um which is China's now most popular AI workplace assistant And so investors are looking for some encouraging metrics um for this um app or or for this agent to really show if there is enough adoption and if act if it's actually generating profit for the company.
Okay. So that's on 10 cent and shares in the Japanese server components maker Tioen are rising and this is after news of a high-profile investor. Yeah, situational awareness is back to the conversation again. Now, we've learned actually that um situational awareness has bought the the this Japanese MLCC, which is the multi-layer ceramic capaci uh capacitor company, Taio Uden. Um and it held shares um back in June and also really building up the stakes to about 11.6%. 6% by um July.
So it's interesting to see how there is actually lots of foreign appetite for this Japanese maker and that is what's exciting. So many uh retail investors in Japan today that um foreign investors are especially such a very topical um foreign investors is looking into uh these Japanese maker. Now it also goes to show how the continuous demand in AI the global demand is still driving the interest in uh stocks along the supply chain and as we know that MLCC in fact is very key to the buildout of AI data center and that's exactly why you saw Taioen up more than 500% this year.
