Anthropic put policy in executive leadership by hiring former California justice Tino Cuéllar.

He joined as Anthropic's first Chief Global Affairs Officer to lead policy and worldwide government relations.

Cuéllar has served as a California Supreme Court justice, White House adviser, Stanford scholar, and Carnegie Endowment president.

Looks like that background for this job spanning regulation, diplomacy, national security, and relationships with officials outside the United States.

The immediate pressure for Anthropic is really domestic because they are challenging a Pentagon supply-chain risk designation tied to its military-use restrictions.

Cuéllar also helped lead California's Frontier AI Working Group, whose recommendations informed SB 53, the state's frontier-model transparency law.

He is leaving Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust after serving since January, and the Trust will choose a successor through its normal process.
