I really don't get the intense desire of some (AI lab stans) to find some hypocrisy here. Robots and LLMs are fundamentally different. And Unitree in particular has a horrible safety track record, this isn't even about the CCP, it's just bad software culture at Unitree. More to the point, the US is the incumbent in LLMs, Kimi or GLM pose negligible threat to the bottom line of its leading companies. In robotics, the situation is the opposite, feeble US makers would get wiped out by opening the gates, much like the US auto industry only *exists* because of barriers against Chinese EVs. And crucially, this is only the beginning of the robotic era, with low tens of hundreds of units produced. The US will need to be able to make robots, and can (theoretically) ramp up to develop globally competitive systems. It's nothing to be proud about, but protectionism here makes sense.
