Futurism: A missing noindex tag allowed some publicly shared Claude conversations to appear in search results.
Anthropic relied on robots.txt alone, which could not stop shared Claude pages from being indexed.
Claude chats are private by default, but Free, Pro, and Max users can create snapshots viewable by anyone holding the URL.
Anthropic blocked crawlers through robots.txt, but Google says blocked pages can still enter results when outside pages link to them.
WIRED found sampled Claude share pages lacked a noindex tag, which would instruct search engines to remove them from results.
Futurism reported medical, school, employee, and internal company material among indexed pages, without publishing links to the content.
Anthropic says it does not submit chat directories or sitemaps, and that links become discoverable only after users share them elsewhere.
Users can review and revoke shared conversations under Settings > Privacy > Shared chats.
Anthropic now needs page-level controls that prevent public sharing from becoming accidental search distribution.
