Jake Xia, MIT lecturer and former Morgan Stanley options trader:

Xia gives the room two bets. first: an 80% chance to lose $500 and a 20% chance to win $500, an expected loss of $300, versus accepting a guaranteed $280 loss. only about 6 out of 50 students chose the gamble. reverse the setup and give them an 80% chance to win $500 and 20% chance to lose $500 - now the expected gain is $300 - yet fewer than 10% chose it over a guaranteed $280 profit.

the $20 difference is tiny. the behavioral difference is not. people want certainty when they are winning and optionality when they are losing, which is why inexperienced traders take profits too early and let bad positions survive long after the original thesis is dead. mathematically, a position has no memory of your entry price; Xia's advice is to ask what you would do if you had no position at all and had to decide again from zero.

and this is where the lecture becomes a warning to every quant looking for a perfect system. MIT literally describes the permanent "holy grail" trading strategy as the financial equivalent of a perpetual-motion machine: build it once, go on vacation, return richer forever. markets change, participants adapt, and any real automated strategy has to keep being researched and updated; the model is never the market itself.

Xia had watched the profession transform in roughly 30 years from trading floors where people could rise from the mailroom to a world filled with advanced degrees in mathematics and computer science. the irony is that more mathematics did not remove human risk: banks still reached 40x leverage, traders still hate realizing losses, and models still get mistaken for reality.

the lecture is free. $1 became $40 of exposure, a 2.5% move became existential, and an MIT classroom gave up $20 of expected profit for certainty. the deepest lesson is not that math can predict markets - it is that math can tell you exactly how exposed you are while your own psychology is trying to convince you that you are safe.
