Hamas says it has dissolved its government in Gaza as it prepares to transfer power to a UN-backed technical committee. A lower level official made the announcement at a news conference today as part of a US brokered ceasefire deal with Israel, but the militant group stopped short of saying it would disarm or hand over security to an international force, both of which are requirements in the deal's second phase. Israel dismissed the announcement as an attempt by Hamas to avoid disarming, and it's unclear what impact it will have on the ground, if any. Some Palestinians say they hope it's a step toward peace.
