The Stock Movers Report, your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market, harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
Now, let's take a look at some of the stocks on the move today in Europe. I'm Lizzie Burden in London alongside Steven Carroll in Brussels. And we're joined this morning by Bloomberg reporter Chloe Melly. Chloe, let's start off in Paris with sweat moves there to the downside down 4.5% at the moment. What's the story?
Yeah, so this is part of a big uh story around this AI trade. So the AI trade being in trouble yet again. So we had this huge drop on the Cosby in South Korea, this massive selloff in the tech stocks there and that is now spilling over into Europe this morning. And so we are seeing the likes of Swatk which is a semiconductor company going into the red. We seeing chipm equipment uh also makers like ASM, ASML also down, data center equipment makers like Schneider Electric and Prism also in the red.
There's really no one that has been spared this morning. So there's a couple of things that have been weighing on that sector uh and that led to that original selloff. The first is that Meta has plans to build a cloud business um that sells AI computing power. And so some analysts are saying that this suggests that Meta actually been has been struggling maybe to find a good use for that computer power and that it may have overbuilt.
So that's led to some uh jitters around AI. And then another thing that has weighed on those Asian tech stocks specifically has been the report that Apple wants to buy memory chips made by Chinese manufacturers and is trying to lobby the US government on this. And so this would hurt the competitive edge that Samsung and Eskeh Highix have managed to have over uh the last few years. And so all of that is really weighing on that tech sector across the world.
And we've seen recently that you know that that's a sector where expectations are so high that markets really don't need a lot to trigger a selloff and uh that's what we've seen today.
Yeah. And I mean really interesting to see some of the the consequences of that tech selloff and how it's affecting European markets. Let's turn to buyer next in Germany. Uh an upgrade for them. Has it convinced investors?
Yes. So it's been upgraded to a buyer rating by Deutsche Bank and that is after the Supreme Court ruling in its favor. Um so we actually saw a huge jump in the shares last week for buyer on the back of this. So it's the US Supreme Court essentially shielded buyer uh from tens of thousands of of claims that its Roundup herbicide should have carried a cancer warning label. So that's a very important ruling because it essentially draws a line under all of the lawsuits that the company has faced over the last decade and that has cost the company you know more than 10 billion and so Deutsche Bank is now saying that this uh ruling removes the overhang that had been really weighing on that stock for years now and it means that investors can now really focus on other things and other aspects of the company and for example saying that there is actually quite compelling growth in the crop businesses. is in the farmer businesses and so this means that now investors can kind of look ahead and and think about other things other than than litigation for buyer
and Chloe as it's you let's head back to France and end on sedc so shares in that French food services company jumping why
yeah so the catering company it's raised it sales guidance and also had really good results really good earnings this morning so the boost of the outlook is also potentially going to prove conservative according to some analysts so there might be even further uh to And there has been really good performance in North America in particular and that has helped kind of end a few consecutive quarters of weakness for that company.
Um it's benefited from a range of different things. There's been good demand at airport lounges for example. Uh good uh demand from the very strong attendance at sports events and of course there'll be also the World Cup that has not been reflected in those earnings but will be for the next quarter. Um and then also generally there's been a real trend of companies moving to more outsourced uh catering models instead of um managing that in house.
And so that's been a real boost as well for that company. And now the attention is really shifting on the capital markets day that we'll be having on the uh 16th of July and where we'll be expecting a little bit more on that strategy going forward.
