Onsemi, Oracle End Week Lower, Biotechne Jumps | Stock Movers
This [music] Stock Movers Report, your roundup of companies making moves in the stock market, harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
Let's take a look [music] at some stocks on the move today. I'm Nora Melinda and we're joined by senior equities reporter and deputy team leader Jess Menton. What is look at What are you looking at in the stock market right now?
So this has been a very big week for obvious reasons when it comes to chip stocks and particularly memory type stocks, but one name that I did want to point out is Onsemi. So the ticker symbol is ON and on a weekly basis, if you look at this in the terminal, the stock's down 25%. So that would be its worst week since November 2008. So almost two decades ago that we saw a huge decline like that.
And most of that coming from today's slide.
Yes, and most of it, to your point, is coming from today. So this is a maker of power sensing components for the automotive industry. So widely followed and it did plunge after it announced its largest acquisition ever. So it's basically trying to capitalize on physical AI. So if you're thinking about robotics and when it comes to the cars and auto driving and things like that. So Onsemi said it was going to buy Synaptics in a $7 billion all-stock deal to basically bolster that push into the physical AI space.
So when you're thinking about autonomous vehicles, that's another sort of play that it's trying to do. So Onsemi CEO actually defended its core business saying that its data center business is running smoothly and accelerating because there were concerns among investors in the company and traders as far as what this means moving forward is kind of the push with this deal that happened this week.
Right.
So, it's a major producer of those uh silicon carbide and it's widely known as a power and sensing solutions for the automotive and EV industry. So, it basically expects this deal to potentially close in mid-20 27. So, basically a year from now and to potentially generate $200 million in annual synergies within the next 18 months. But, of course, companies always like to talk about synergies and uh how that could potentially play out.
But, technology companies are really hitting uh the acquisition mode in the race to strengthen those types of AI capabilities. So, like Qualcomm's another example.
Right.
So, it actually this week snapped up infrastructure startup Modular. So, it's trying to beef up its software capabilities. So, this month Salesforce also said it would buy AI customer service platform Finn for about $3.6 billion. So, you're seeing this not just for onsemi, but broadly too with other companies that are in this space.
So, we know On was the worst-performing stock in the S&P 500 this week. Let's go to the best-performing stock in the S&P 500 this week.
So, Bio-Techne, ticker is TECH. up almost 23% this week. So, this is the flip side of it. So, in the green this week, best week since May of 2003. So, a lot of big size and scopes for these companies. So, Bio-Techne, it's a Minneapolis-based life sciences company. So, it develops, manufactures, and sells life science reagents, instruments, and services for like research, diagnostic, bioprocessing markets. So, actually Germany's Merck, this was the biggest deal in more than a decade for them.
So, they're betting on that demand for complex drug research and manufacturing. And so, it bought this company basically if you're looking for over $11 billion. And so, that's a big deal for them. It's equivalent to maybe around $73 per share, but basically trying to bet on kind of the future here and what it could mean for those types of biotech spaces.
Perfect. And let's talk about Oracle. We've been talking so much about these tech names. What's going on with Oracle this week?
Well, this is another big play here. So, the stock actually did fall this week after a report that its key partner OpenAI could potentially delay that IPO. So, of course a lot of eyeballs on this name in this space just because of the name that it is. The ticker symbol is ORCL down 19% worst week since August 2001. So, another big size and scope here. So, reports saying that OpenAI could consider delaying its initial public offering until next year.
So, OpenAI is a key partner to Oracle's hugely expensive effort to become an AI cloud computing leader. So, I would expect to potentially, when I'm talking to traders and money managers, that there could be more volatility because of the back and forth [music] with the timeline on this.
