Tropical storms and hurricanes can change very quickly in terms of their structure and their intensity, which makes them more challenging to predict than other types of weather systems. At Google, we developed Weather Next, a global weather forecasting AI model that is also able to predict where hurricanes are going to go and how strong they're going to become. In 2025, forecasters faced two scenarios for Hurricane Melissa: a weak storm [music] over Haiti or a Category 5 hurricane striking Jamaica. 3 days earlier, Weather Next predicted Melissa's intensification [music] and Jamaican landfall with greater accuracy than previous models.

We used the model's high-confidence signals to issue urgent messages about life-threatening [music] weather hazards days before the hurricane actually reached Jamaica. It's going to cause catastrophic, life-threatening damage. [music] Because of that early warning, we were able to give that advanced notice to the public to say move from certain areas. That reduction in harm really does make a [music] difference to our people.

So, it saved their lives

and it saves the livelihoods that they want to secure. Weather Next was a really valuable tool helping us make these more accurate [music] and aggressive forecasts for Melissa. And I think going forward, Weather Next and other AI models will become [music] part of our routine forecast toolkit here at the Hurricane Center.
