In Uganda, [music] we are seeing higher incidence of cancers. One in 12 females get breast cancer at some point in their life. And we are observing earlier onset of the disease compared [music] to other parts of the world. But also less survival rates, partly because cancer testing is not [music] done as regularly. Women here get assistance from health care when they are seeing the symptoms. [music] But if we do the screening way earlier at a genetic level, we'd be able to do much better. [music] See this, right?

It's a higher expression. A lot of the work that we're doing is to identify targets that could be used as vaccines. Previously, this [music] research would have been done abroad because those are the environments that had these sorts of resources. Now, [music] through the availability of tools like AlphaFold AlphaFold and I gravity, we can do this research here [music] because the capital cost is much less. Once I have a laptop and connected to a server, that gives me a lot [music] of power.

The latest tools are the most powerful technology. We identified a protein that is highly expressed among breast cancer patients. If these targets are validated in the lab, this could be life-changing for breast cancer here in [music] Uganda. We had 15,000 sites within the project. Using AlphaFold, we've been able to cut down the range of sites to just 15. If they turn out to be effective, then we have a candidate [music] for vaccine development.

Google DeepMind is actually democratizing [music] the kind of science that we can do. Imagine a cancer vaccine. That is where we see straight translation from our research to public health impact here and globally.
